Parents ordering a birthday cake for their son on the web instead of baking one themselves.

I don't know, but somehow that makes me sad.

  • (cs) in reply to faoileag

Let us assume for a second that both of these parents suck at baking. I mean really suck; so bad that every time they have tried to bake a cake before they've ended up with 2 brake discs separated by grim buttery goo, and slathered with icing like a badly plastered ceiling.

Wouldn't that make their son more sad than them shelling out the moderate cost to get a professionally done cake?

Also... if they'd made their own, no-one would have had the fun of food that isn't unicode compliant.

I'm sure I have the same standard of 'professional' as you. That was so badly decorated it looked home-made anyway even without the question marks.

My favourite cake story is when I ordered a fancy cake for my mom´s 64th birthday. As a little joke ( in the line of "oh, 64 is SOOOO ugly number") I asked the baker to put there as square of 8. I wrote is for the personally, in front of them. In our country, we write it as small 2 above 8. And you guess right, they gave me a cake with "happy 82nd birthday". But they fixed it when I asked. But this one is better. Even better than the tattoo "FILE COOLTATTOO01.JPG NOT FOUND".

  • Nick H (unregistered) in reply to George Nacht

    You should've asked for 2^6.

What's even more bizarre is that someone entered Adolf Hitler as a starring actor, despite him never being an actor, let alone not being in the Nuremburg Trials. That's not entering text for the wrong entry and not checking your work, that's making stuff up.

Contrary to popular belief, OS/2 is still very much alive, although under a different name. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the core systems from American Airlines runs OS/2 or its successor.

And yes, there are still a few 'dinosaurs' out there using it privately (and no, I'm not one of them), and yes, it can print boarding tickets on any modern printer. So there's your real WTF :P

In a Scottish chippy, ordering a "hamburger supper" will actually get you two pork burgers, lightly battered and deep fried of course. It's a few years ago now, but I don't recall it being what one would describe as a delicacy.

I think they must have scraped the "starring" entries from http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0246818/fullcredits/cast . Probably an algorithm selects the most famous names in the list according to some criteria, and after all, who is a bigger name than Hitler?

That's not really all the bizarre. For documentaries, they often list real people who appear in the film in the same place where for a fiction film they list the actors. Maybe it's not technically accurate, but the meaning is clear. Actually, what does "starring" mean?

As to Hitler not being there: I haven't seen this movie, but it's not implausible that it might include film clips of events that happened before the trials began, which might well include scenes with Mr Hitler.

And then hundreds of years from now, historians will find these research papers and write scholarly books about the role of Mr Bean in the post-World War II world.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if something like that has actually happened. When my wife was in grad school, one of her classmates did a master's thesis claiming that a well-known scandal about Andrew Jackson was probably total fiction. She traced all the scholarly references to the scandal back to original sources, and then traced those back, etc, and concluded that they all ultimately came from a campaign flyer by one of Mr Jackson's political opponents.

The American Airlines screen is not a WTF. Keeping support for older systems is a plus. Besides, it is Adobe who would be supporting the functionality.

The Staples one was amusing. I ran into something similar in the Greater Vancouver transit system. At the time, there were three zones. I usually travelled only in one zone, so I would buy a single-zone monthly bus pass. When travelling in more than one zone during peak times, one had to pay more. It was $0.40 to upgrade to two zones and $1.15 to upgrade to three zones. When I had a three-zone trip, with the trips I was making, I could treat it as two two-zone trips. Transit later redid the bus passes so that a pass was locked to one particular zone.

    Sincerely,

    Gene Wirchenko
