That'll of course allow any other images from that images/ads directory, which will make the ads work again. Sneaky.
Except the ads seem to be served from a different directory.

I don't see any images, did the post get screwed up?

The "upgradable to 16 bits" ad reminds me of a story that a professor told us about back when he worked for a late 70's microcomputer manufacturer. They sold either a machine with 8K of memory or a 16K machine for 50% more money. His father insisted that he needed a 16K machine but he finally convinced his father to get the 8K one. After receiving the computer he opened it up, sniped a resister, and now they had a 16K machine.

I guess we didn't have spell checkers that could change satelite into satellite back in the day.

It's possible to allow the images for this site only.
Even better - "Disable on this page only" (w/ Adblock Plus 1.0)

    "circle 221 on inquiry card."
Perfectly reasonable, unless you're quibbling about spelling. Trade magazines used to include pre-printed inquiry cards; you circled the numbers of the products you were interested in, posted one (postage-free) card, and some time later the advertisers would send you a brochure. Much easier than contacting each advertiser individually.

I don't remember seeing them so much, if at all, since this new-fangled internet thingy appeared.

Am I the only one who has a problem with a 250 mile line of sight connection on a curved earth? How tall is that tower??

Is it just me or does the disassembled mess on the floor look just like the computer in the desk? So the VP of finance manages to wreck one perfectly good desk_slash_computer, let's give him another?

  • Chrisos (unregistered)

As a professional designer of microwave receivers, I see nothing wrong with the image.

Sure it appears to have a snooze button and an alarm indicator, which are typical on a clock radio, but that is just standard equipment on even the cheapest of receivers.

The snooze button is used when low Earth satelites drop over the horizon, you hit snooze to wait for the next satelite to rise to line of sight. The alarm button is for when the signal to noise ratio is dropping precipitously and you have a few nanoseconds to realign your dish before you get a data drop out. And while we are on the subject, the "clock", is clearly a dual display freqency and signal strength display.

How can you supposedly computer literate people not know this stuff?

About 42,000 feet - it's obviously got wings. Mind you, they do mention satellites - but then what would be useful in LEO ?

I'm taking bets for next weeks What the Ad post.

How many comments will be posted before the forum devolves into Tier 1 tech support?

Seriously, if you're reading this site, you should be able to figure out an ad-blocker...or at least have enough shame to not speak up when you can't figure it out.

Seriously, if you're reading this site, you should be able to read, especially where the poster said

Each page contains just a 32x32 GIF picture, which is completely transparent.

Also, no adblocker or anything else that might interfere with the page loading.

Well, SOMETHING is ad-blocking them. I see them fine on my end with Privoxy and AdBlockPlus off. Might you be running an antivirus or firewall that has a built-in ad blocker? (I know Outpost does, dunno about others...)

I just want to know how they fit a 24" dish in a 19" carton...

  • Grateful (unregistered)

In general I don't like adblockers. I block popups, restrict some javascript functions and my browser will not automatically download and play flash files, they are replaced by a play button. I will only go this far. Little did I know that I had already broken my rules.

I'd like to thank TDWTF for helping me to discover an adblocker in my machine that was quite a wtf in itself: (1) It was installed using an automatic update of a mostly unrelated product. (2) Installation was silent and the component enabled by default. (3) The component is active even if the preferences say that it is not.

Use a web proxy (type "web proxy" into the search engine of your choice then enter the url for the page) - works fine for me. Doesn't explain why the ads get filtered though (no ad blockers installed, etc, etc ,etc).

Somebody has to say it: the REAL WTF is how many of the "IT professionals" on this site can't figure out how to bypass their local and/or corporate ad blocking.

    Another fun article, thanks.
