As any software developer knows, names are always unique. So there can be only one Stonewall Jackson, the singing general.

  • NoLand (unregistered) in reply to nerd4sale

Now I do wonder, are the Singing Generals's songs in English, Old (ca. 450-1100) or in Creales and pidgins, English based?

    names are always unique

This is unfortunately not true. We should be referring to people by their GUIDs. For example, if we had used c77a5003-4fbc-4e89-b760-4ffd7a57ba83 and 8b9202fb-ad12-46ce-a949-7e3fea07b868 there would have been no confusion about whether we are talking about the singer or the general.

Furthermore the constant mixing up of 8b3c3116-1680-408d-9b92-5914cae866e8 and 916fabb5-f272-4594-b5f6-6c5f478ce929 would be completely obviated. Never again will we accidentally book a world renowned actor to give a talk about science.

The medical one was strange in so many ways. Are we supposed to know the difference between "race" and "ethnicity". And on top of that one "hispanic or latino", which I suspect is a subset of one of the former. And finally "Specific Races" sounds like a WTF all by itself.

With the wind blowing at over 8 billion times the speed of light, I'd want to stay far away from that too. Probably some black holes are gonna form there or something.

  • Brian (unregistered) in reply to citron

The obsession with race/ethnicity in the U.S. is one of the biggest WTFs in the country. As for me, I usually just write-in "American" on those forms, as what little I know of my ancestry indicates that I'm pretty much a mutt that doesn't fit into one of those neat little buckets. Which I suspect is true of more of us than we'd care to admit.

Granted, ethnicity does have slightly more relevance in a medical context, in regards to genetic predisposition toward certain conditions. But otherwise people tend to give it far more weight than it deserves.

It's not clear what the choices were. Was it Yes-No? Or Latino, Hispanic, or blank?

Latino and Hispanic are overlapping, but neither is a subset of the other. My impression is that to most people: Latino = a resident of the New World who speaks a dialect descended from one of the Romance (Latin-derived) languages of Iberia. Hispanic = a speaker of a Spanish dialect. Portuguese-speaking Brazilians are Latino but not Hispanic, and Spaniards are Hispanic but not Latino.

Quebecois and Cajuns speak a Romance language and are residents of the New World, but are neither Hispanic nor Latino.

The Singing Generals would be a good name for a rock band.

I assume the Race dropdown has "Other" as a choice, and then you fill in Specific Race.

Thanks for demonstrating that "ye olde" is not Old English, not by a longshot. It's, at most, late Middle English.

So many mixed feelings. I can't choose twixt brainwright and cumberworld for the Olde English entry. Some days I want to stand my ground that the world just use Anglish. (https://anglish.fandom.com/wiki/What_is_Anglish%3F)

Years ago I was faced with a similar form at a local urgent care place and I chose Middle English hoping it might be a laugh. No one mentioned it and on a more recent visit I was asked to confirm my information and it still said Middle English.

Of course, if this were a computer-controlled office, I would still be sitting in the waiting area until a doctor who spoke Middle English was available.

Brian, race and ethnicity are asked as audit fields. Our laws forbid us from discriminating based on these two characteristics, but unless we ask, we can't audit the clinic for compliance.

I brought my wife over on a fiancee visa. We had zero idea of her race. Her parents had ten children ranging from blonde and blue eyes to the darkest skin tones I've seen. All are natural children, none adopted, none as the result of extramarital affairs. Was the dark skin aboriginal / native or of African descent? After a few years of marriage, we got her a DNA test. Turns out she has white European, native American, and black African DNA. That merited getting tested for sickle cell and other race-based medical possibilities. I can't wait to see what shows up when our kids take a DNA test.
