    Regardless, it's more graceful than replacing them all with "Cannot get translation string" or some such.

    And for my comment on the article: "80030184" looks to me like a failed HRESULT of some sort. Putting on my Internet Search Googles didn't help decode it, sadly.

    As always, provide something less meaningless to the end user, and log it behind the scenes, dudes!

    BASH was good enough for my grandpappy* and it's good enough for me!

    * not really. my grandfather wouldn't have known what a terminal was if it bit him in the ass

    Dell Password: did the "too long" message appear after the first attempt, and only the current length is updated in real time?

    Dutch postal codes: As German postal codes are exactly 5 digits long, someone already took account for the Dutch market. That person just forgot to allow for Hex digits.

    Australian National Maritime Musuem: TIL where the blue-ish screen background comes from since Windows 95!

    Avignon: I think this reveals the real reason to take the key combo Control + Alt + Delete is that you have to be in Control of the Alternative Pope to Delete him.

    Except they're not hex. The letters can go all the way to ZZ. But alright, just call it Hexitiantal digits (except 0-9 are not allowed in the last 2 places).

    It could be fun when MediaMarkt is going to (try to) allow British postal codes...

    They're not hex digits. It's [1-9][0-9]{3}[A-Z]{2}

    Why, naturally. After all, a hex number requires less ink and paper to write down than a decimal number :trollface:.

    Less paper, I'll give you that one. I'd have to see an analysis before I'd concede the ink one.

    The correct length for a Dutch postcode field is seven characters: four digits, a space and two letters. At a rough guess, 99 out of a hundred web sites don’t allow users to type the postcode correctly by only allowing six characters. Worse, I’ve encountered some that allowed more than six and then complained the postcode wasn’t correct because of the space.

    Her statement does not imply either of those. However, it does imply that robot monotone can be distinguished from human monotone, and this is the implication that I find triggering.

    I would have thought that there are only a small number of decimal numbers, such as 111, which would take less ink than their hexadecimal counterparts.
