    I've used those signs. They boot up in either a demo loop (default), a preprogrammed message, or optionally, with a battery the last message sent to it (using NVRAM). I've had a high end unit that had RAM, NVRAM, RTC and a few other features. By default the unit uses NVRAM so on boot it will run through the list of features and then display the last message.

    You can preprogram messages into the RAM and program in a "script" that lets you play back messages in an order, or use the RAM to hold bitmaps you can display. A RAM only unit is fine if you're using the sign in a controlled environment where you need to update what it says all the time, whereas a store might want an NVRAM unit so they can program in their messages and have the sign autonomously run.

    Of course, the thing is the sign is supposed to indicate the next stop, so I'm not sure if the sign was going through its demo or just stopped at showing "32K RAM" because it was waiting for control messages to be sent to it.
