Oh dear, a specialist in the worst possible way to use git. Joy of joys.

  • ray10k (unregistered)

    Truly a clbuttic.

  • (nodebb)

We still don't know what was the size and the color of the butt.

  • witchdoctor (unregistered) in reply to Mr. TA

    It's butt-sized and butt-colored obviously.

  • 3stdev (unregistered)

This is by far one of the funnest WTFs in a long time. I'm still looking for the UpVote button for my assessment.

  • _END (unregistered)

    Obviously the thing to do is to use both conventions, to be backwards compatible. enum Color { COLOR_RED, COLOR_BLACK, COLOR_BLUE, COLOR_SIZE, COLOR_BUTT }

  • Raj (unregistered) in reply to Steve_The_Cynic

At least it's source code. I've seen build artifacts, massive log files and even third-party binaries pushed to shared repos, only to get "deleted" in the next commit. That's how you get to a repo of 50GB or more.

Different languages have different punctuation rules. Not everyone is aware that translating to English isn't merely about substituting phrases. Get over it.

Addendum 2019-09-30 09:17: And different capitalization rules, e.g. German capitalizes every noun.

  • my name is missing (unregistered)

What the butt... actually the better WTF was using CI to fix your compile errors.

  • Brian Boorman (google)

    Butt wait - there's more!

    TRUE/FALSE/BUTT_NOT_FOUND

  • Clint (unregistered)

I LIKE BIG COLOR_BUTTS AND I CAN NOT LIE

  • Argle (unregistered)

I can't help but be reminded of the late, great Timothy Dexter who added this note to the second edition of his self-published book: “fouder mister printer the Nowing ones complane of my book the fust edition had no stops I put in A Nuf here and thay may peper and solt it as they plese” which was followed by a page of assorted punctuation.

  • (nodebb)

We had a web guy who would do the same thing with his source. He'd add a new feature or "fix" a bug, and never bother to test it as "that was QA's job". It gave him more time to work on his own projects. Eventually he was allowed to work full time on his projects after being fired.

    So Dana kicked Jerry's butts.

  • sizer99 (google) in reply to bjolling

It's the job of whoever wants to be understood (and respected) to learn the language they're trying to work in. I learned Japanese syntax because I don't want to communicate like a mentally challenged toddler by using Japanese words with English grammar when speaking to HQ.

But since Jerry's a C-level, he is already full of respect bestowed upon him directly by God and doesn't need to deal with such trivialities. Sadly, nobody else was able to 'get over it'. They're so unprofessional.

  • Drone (unregistered)

    So clbuttic.

  • Olivier (unregistered) in reply to bjolling

That's part of managing a foreign language to learn how to use punctuation and capitals. You may be making some mistakes, but if you always got it wrong, then you do not speak that language. Even worse when it is your own.

  • (nodebb) in reply to sizer99

Nowhere in the article is mentioned he wasn't able to be understood by the team. I want my architects to excel at architecture. Correct use of English is important but knowing all capitalization and punctuation rules definitely is NOT needed to be a good lead architect and it shouldn't bother anyone - the resident gammar nazi excluded obviously.

  • Sleepy Joe (unregistered)

Is Jerry by any chance the long lost twin brother of Peesident D2S?

  • RLB (unregistered) in reply to bjolling

If you think commas and capitals aren't important, feel free to help your uncle jack off a horse.

  • I'm not a robot (unregistered) in reply to bjolling
Nowhere in the article is mentioned he wasn't able to be understood by the team
Jerry was incomprehensible in every language he spoke, including his native tongue

  • sizer99 (google) in reply to bjolling

Uh, I think I see the problem here then, which is that you were unable to comprehend the original article (seriously, it says right up front, very clearly, that he was incomprehensible to everyone). For the rest of us proper grammar and punctuation will continue to be seen as important communication skills. They're crucial for design and maintainability. And a system architect is the person who needs to be able to communicate the best, to make sure their vision gets through (assuming they actually have a good one).

  • Butt Police (unregistered)

Rest assured, his punctuation was the least of our worries. We once asked him to explain some details about the way startup worked (it was all “synchronized” through a bunch of sleeps). He gave us some incomprehensible text and a meaningless equation that gave ludicrous results (4000 seconds to start?).

Maybe it’ll help to know he was also an able creatr of sockets?

  • PMF1 (unregistered)

The real WTF is allowing "git push --force" on master on any repo. That defeats the entire purpose of a version control system. Which tells us again that you should know the strengths and weaknesses of your tools (be it git or the compiler or...).

  • (nodebb)

Jesus, it's two days and nobody has said this yet:

I think there's nothing wrong with Jerry's butts. I like big butts, I cannot lie.

Addendum 2019-10-04 08:18: Turns out I missed one...

  • PenguinF (unregistered) in reply to Ruud

    Easy: BODYPART_BUTT_2

  • Gnasher729 (unregistered) in reply to bjolling

I don’t know what you expect from an architect, but anyone who submits changes without compiling repeatedly is an asshat that ought to be fired immediately.

  • Not_an_admin (unregistered) in reply to PMF1

Hell, he's the lead architect and has lots of powers. Don't you think he'll just remove that protection because it blocks him working his way?
