    I like the pair of equivalences implied by this: ZX Spectrum Basic == velociraptor and VBA == chicken.

    So fairly accurate, then? Velociraptor and chicken are both dinosaurs, one slightly more recent than the other; the BASICs mentioned are both by Microsoft, one slightly more recent than the other.

    Most 8-bit machines featured Microsoft Basic. The famous exception is Integer BASIC on the Apple II (Woz wrote that), though you could get regular BASIC from Microsoft that supported floating point. Even Commodore BASIC was from Microsoft, though Commodore managed to omit the Microsoft name on their little known Commodore 64. Though it came back on the C128.

    I just checked the translation issue. It still behaves as advertised. Leave out the period at the end of the sentence and you get a different email domain.

    Except British computers typically got their BASIC interpreters from British companies: I remember well how Amstrad's splash screen credited Locomotive Software for its interpreter; I think Acorn got theirs from Cambridge University (and the result was more advanced than anything Microsoft was putting out at the time); ... and Sinclair contracted Nine Tiles.

    Most American 8-bit machines featured Microsoft BASIC. All the major UK-based 8-bit computer vendors (Sinclair, Amstrad, Acorn) had their own BASICs, so no, the ZX Spectrum ran Sinclair BASIC, not Microsoft. The only notable UK machines to run Microsoft BASIC were the Dragon systems, but they were near-clones of the American TRS-80 Color Computer anyway.
