I don't know about DEC gear (the washing machine sized drives), but the manufacturer of the gear I was using in the 70's had the smarts to include a 3 phase sequence circuit that prevented a relay from engaging that would not power up the motor of the disk drive.

As for reversing the phase sequence of a 3 phase motor to "slow it down", this technique is common referred to as "plugging". The hard part is to recognize that the motor has stopped before the shaft turns the wrong way.

On the piston video: If you want to see the pistons run, maybe they removed one head from a V8 engine, and left the other side to power things. I wouldn't recommend this, considering that things could get sticky before long. Then there are things like Indy race cars have incredible piston travel speeds. About shifting gears the wrong way: I remember when I was observing autocrosses (timed laps) and one guy was downshifting to first gear, and accidentally got it in reverse. Bizarre to see the car starting to backup in the middle of the race. Moral: don't do that!

One might be correct on that point, but one might not consider that the right foot is required on the rear brake to avoid inadvertently performing the maneuvre sooner than intended.
Really? I have driven motorcycles for five years or so, but I have always put down my right foot (or both) and I have never inadvertently sped off the line. Maybe you have more mountains where you live. :trolleybus:
Also, using the rear brake while accelerating is a common technique for smoothly modulating acceleration on a motorcycle, or to control wheelspin or wheelies.
Never used that either, but I'll take your word for it.

Motorcycle training has the rider put the left foot on the ground when stopping.
Not over here it doesn't. You put the right foot down, leaving the left foot free to shift into gear.

reverse is almost never synchromesh, though I think first generally is synchromesh.
I used to own a Proton which did have synchromesh on reverse too; apparently I learned some bad habits because when I switched to a Kia it took me a few weeks to learn to stop the car from rolling before trying to engage reverse (e.g. as part of a 3-point turn).

Both cars had a simple interlock that prevented you from engaging reverse if you were currently in 5th gear but the interlock didn't apply if you tried to change from, say, 3rd to reverse. (The diabolical screeching does tend to put you off though.)

In Detroit, lojack isn't guaranteed to help. They can have the car stripped before you even reallize it's gone.

granted, but with lojack you can at least retrieve one part....

Left foot down is called the ready position. Google might help you find more.

Stay Upright is an Australian motorcycle trainging company, probably the biggest in Australia. They're responsible for most of the compulsory training and license testing here.

Have you been trained or are you just muddling along? I suspect the latter. Some training will really sharpen up your skills and make you a safer, smoother and faster (when you want to be) rider.

I have a driver's license, but that's it. So yes, it's the latter. I don't do heel-and-toe stuff in a car either. Also I gave motorcycles up when our first child came along.

And this is why, when you see them bringing in a single-phase generator, you just go get the proper quantity of battery chargers to attach to the DC side of your UPS. Getting the phase matched correctly for switching from UPS to mains is difficult enough with the well-regulated industrial power. Doing it with a single-phase generator that's had a three-phase converter wired into it is not even worth considering.
