    lame.

    ;-)

You'll have to forgive me on the Guinness one. After all, I don't ingest alcoholic beverages. And since I used DVDs, BRDs, Netflix, and Amazon Video for my movie/TV needs, I don't really get many commercials.

I'll take the lame for not using brilliant though. :'(

we should ask you to flag for woosh so @frostcat can get another woosh!

Why would I flag for whoosh? I rarely do that.

    TRWTF is the image.

    1. Globular proteins are not embedded in the membrane, that protein would be an integral membrane protein
    2. It's misleading to call a sugar (saccharide) a "side chain" on a protein, side chains are one of 20 (with a scant few exceptions) groups. They can be modified later (post-translationally) in myriad ways, but those covalent adducts aren't "side chains".
    3. "Alpha helix protein" that doesn't show alpha-helical structure (except in the membrane, where it's already annotated.)

Faster because you don't have to play DJ a few times (`diskcopy` read the disk contents to RAM, so if available RAM was less than the size of the disk, you'd have to swap disks multiple times).

Accessing files on the copied disk might also have been faster when using [x]copy and the hard drive as temporary storage:

copy was very stupid, and it required three disk shuffles per file or something like that. xcopy was smarter, and read as many files into memory as it could (a bit like diskcopy, but only the used sectors).
    OffByOne:
    Warning

    • You cannot use xcopy to copy a startup disk.
You could work around that warning by doing a sys <targetdrive> after xcopying your files.
Depending on your version of DOS, before, rather than after. Or just format /s your destination disk in the first place.

That's when copying from floppy to floppy. I was talking about copying from source floppy to HD (using either copy or xcopy) and then copying from HD to destination floppy in a separate second step. You're right, but the stupid copy behaviour (vs. the smarter xcopy behaviour) doesn't matter (at least not as much) when copying from floppy to HD or vice versa.

Can you elaborate on the "before"? I can't recall any situation where a sys after a copy messed things up. We are talking about ~20 years ago of course, so I don't have absolute trust in my memory.

It varied depending on the version of DOS; the original boot sector needed IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS to use the first two directory entries and the whole of IO.SYS needed be located at the start of the disk. Later versions only required the first few sectors of IO.SYS to be at the start of the disk. Then SYS was improved to relocate sectors and/or directory entries to allow the system files to be transferred. Current boot sectors allow the first few sectors of IO.SYS to be at any contiguous location.
