the company hadn't grown up to "giving sick days" yet

Oh, America and your crazy worker hostile policies. How did the Dylans manage so many sick days though?

I once had a boss like Thomas, it was quite depressing. I quit, two years later they made him quit, his incompetence became so obvious even his superiors could not ignore it

Maybe Dylan from Making Da Band got a new position? https://youtu.be/7JjLd3MufCE?si=Xma8U-YqmrtyIJ1R&t=45

    LMFAO! :D

    That "Dylan" story is hilarious!

  • Darren (unregistered)

Sounds like Dylan never actually existing and was created by Thomas to get himself a second pay cheque. Slip a few dollarpounds to someone off Fiverr to join a meeting every now and then to pretend to be Dylan.

I worked at a place where executives got unlimited vacation time. We rarely saw the security executive. He had two full-time security executive jobs with two different companies, both with unlimited vacation, and he got two paychecks. It's entirely possible there were more than two. He laughed at the CEO when he was fired.

That could be true, but why then did Thomas schedule a demo with Dylan if he is not real? This story doesn't make sense, or there are some big missing pieces

  • (nodebb)

Basically you have an employee who doesn't do any work, never shows up in the office, and this goes on for a year and nobody cares?

The company is in startup mode. I've never heard of startup companies where you have people getting a pay check for a year for no reason.

This entire story is full of internal inconsistencies. I actually think it was made up.

  • (nodebb)

Agreed. There are a ton of questions here. I'm assuming Thomas didn't know about "the Dylans" just due to his completely lack of attention. But yeah - a whole year of zero work on a startup is completely bizarre, even if the manager is out to lunch.

I am a consultant at a firm that hires other consultants, from many different consulting firms. One of the other consultants was let go a while ago. Apparently he was trying to work for two separate firms at the same time, and mixed up the projects during the standup; and reported on the status of the other company's work.

Super sad that inept managers let this happen. Tons of people just never worked to get covid paychecks. Not to mention the story of North Korea getting some remote jobs, and stories my recruiter told me of people who would always be getting jobs and never working, so they could get 4 paychecks of a job at 3 jobs at a time and then apply for a new job during the inevitable firing.

OR- these stories are made up as an excuse to get people back into the office “so they don’t lose property value”

  • (nodebb)

Agreed the story sounds made-up. Especially the happily ever after bit. The whole place has to be massively dysfunctional to have a CEO, a Thomas, and a Dylan that messed up. Then Penny the new manager shows up and all is unicorns and rainbows forever after?

Now I could see a company where everyone from the CEO down was basically scamming their investors. They might have started with a good idea and good intentions, but pretty quickly that turns to CEOs getting ever bigger rounds of investment from ever fancier presentations (not products) while the rest of Rome is doing it's damnedest to burn down all the cash.

You know you've been programming too much when the mood "struct". (Also, everyone is singular, so how many webcamS does everyone need to turn on?)

The stories here always have a core of truth, but the framing story is written from whole cloth. The trouble with this story is that the frame is overshadowing the core WTF. I think the writer wanted to emphasize how a disorganized PM completely missed a fraudulent employee, but they spend so long on the disorganized PM, and they "tell not show" the core WTF, so your focus is on the PM instead of the WTF.

Addendum 2024-04-09 13:49: As opposed to the correct "show, don't tell".

Our company once hired a .net programmer who was originally from Hong Kong. His work was excellent and then one day his visa ran out and he had to return to Hong Kong to get a new one. This would take a few weeks or months, but it didn't matter because he could work from Hong Kong using the Internet. However, his work quality dramatically deteriorated pretty much as soon as he landed.

We later found out that it was his girl friend we should have hired and she broke up with him as soon as he left the UK.

Worked in one company selling hardware and staff got a discount. A pair of scallywags (one from the sales team and one from the installation team) got together and when a potential customer phoned, the sales guy would transfer the call to his mobile and complete the sale with his own company. He would then purchase the hardware (with the discount) and the installation guy would do the installation at weekends or his day off. Was working well until they accidently put one of their own installation dates in their company Outlook and got caught...
