Speaking of "metric inches", when my younger brother got his first driver's license, he was asked for his height and weight. He was proud that he was almost 6' tall, but he didn't hedge; he gave his actual height as "five feet, eleven and a half inches".

The clerk dutifully rounded this up to 5' 12". And that's what his license listed as his height: 5' 12". He thought that was hilarious (which it was), and he was proud to tell people that he was 5' 12" tall. He cherished that driver's license.

He evertually grew a little more, and now he's about 6' 4", and has a newer license. I don't think he was able to get his height listed as 5' 16" though.

So.. what's wrong with those height ranges?

Inches were invented by someone with 12 fingers.

Or more likely by a man who wore size 12.

"Here, lay on the ground, and I'll measure your height with my feet."

"Hey, good idea: until now I've been measuring with the top section of my index finger. Looks like your foot has about 12 of those."

With shoes on, you mean. Oh, and I think inches were based on the width of the thumb.

"Hey, guys, I've got a better way. I've got a stopwatch, and I'll measure how long it takes for light to travel the length of your body. Darn, my stopwatch doesn't have enough marks on it."

"...but first, we need to put you in a vacuum."

Perhaps your hands are unusually small? My hands are not "plus size" (though my fingers are longer than average), but my thumbs are about 1" wide at the base of the nail. (There may be some Neanderthal in my background, but not in the last 1000 or so generations....)

Actually, inches were invented by someone smart enough to realize that even the mostly-illiterate people at the time could understand a measuring system where the basic unit (the foot) could be divided into halves, thirds, and quarters and arrive at round numbers of of inches.

I'm not saying it should be kept given today's average level of literacy and math education.

Which happens to be an absurdly poor estimate on some hands; easily off by 150% in some cases. For me, the middle segment of the little finger is much closer.

But then again, how often do people have to make digital estimates of distance these days? If you frequently do, I recommend you take a measuring-stick/-tape and figure out your own best matches, instead of relying on (ahem) rules-of-thumb.

That's quite interesting. But now I'm wondering why the Egyptians didn't include the tips of their fingers (along with the knuckles) in their counting method. That would have allowed counting up to 16 on each hand. Eqyptian Hexadecimal !

Yeah I don't quite get how these finger-binary systems are meant to work. The best system I can think of is one where the finger on one hand is used to point at the 19 knuckle/tip points on the other hand.

The good thing about this system is that the state is still clear (as with the original thumb-knuckle 12-system) but that you have many more states. If you combine the information of which finger is doing the pointing with what it's pointing at, you get 2*(5 * 19) or an 190-system.

What the hell, chuck in the center of the palm and you get a nice metric 200 :)

  • Cobi (unregistered) in reply to gilleain

The way that finger binary is supposed to work is you've got 10 fingers that can be in one of two states -- straight or curled. So, convert the number you wish to represent to binary, and adjust your fingers accordingly -- straight for a 1, curled for a 0. So, 1 = 00000 00001, or your right pinky is straight and your other fingers are all curled. 425 = 01101 01001, or your right hand pointer and pinky are straight and your left hand ring finger, middle finger, and thumb are straight.

This of course requires that you be fluent with binary, and can independently control each finger.

It actually dates from the Sumerians as far as we know. They could count to 60 with two hands, one hand counting the phalanges and on the other hand counting the number of 'full hands', so you would have 5 x 12 = 60.

This in turn was the basis for the base 60 numeric system the Babylonians used, which is the base for hour clock.
