Due to abnormal aircraft movement, you should lean forward, put your head between your knees, and kiss your ass goodbye!

What I find particularly funny about the car advertisement is that the PRICE is shown as "ERROR" but the asterisk [pertaining to a disclaimer] is "PHP". I viewed it as; the reason for the erroneous price (according to the disclaimer) PHP.

At least it wasn't VB!! (or XML, on a wooden table........)

Yeah, I could see TV reception being bad when the aircraft is doing its best impression of a brick sans thrust... O_o

  • Ville (unregistered)

I don't see the WTF in the airplane message, well except for capitalization.

I might have written it the other way around though, like this: "Programming is temporarily unavailabel due to normal aircraft movement"

Well, I'd admire them if it had actually worked... Unfortunately, the image also suffers from rotation artifacts on some of the bitmaps.

The "normal aircraft movement" one is a standard error message - the plane is turning or bouncing (but that's normal! it doesn't mean the airplane is crashing!), and their satellite TV equipment is unable to keep up and point at the satellites properly. I've seen that error a lot on JetBlue as well under those circumstances, and never found myself wondering WTF before...

It would be a WTF if it were only happening to a single channel, I suppose, and all the rest of the channels were available.

  • (cs)

The first time I read the Airplane message, I thought... hmm... this is a normal airplane, so passengers aren't allowed to program its movement. Well, that's good news, I guess.

For everybody who still doesn't get the FedEx comment: The picture is from Castaway, a movie starring Tom Hanks (CEO of FedEx) and a volleyball, who have crash-landed on an island. So I guess the image correlates really well: It's FedEx, and it's crashing.

Some channels could use different transmission means (for example : movie played from within the plain will always work) and would still be available, when other get suddenly out of range.

Or maybe, availability for some channels is linked to plane position and complex WTF-ish licensing deals. As in "the stupid DRM for this chanel can't determine in which region the plane currently is and whether or not licensing deal exist to allow us to play it there".

I was thinking the same thing. Dynamic image processing with php? Not too shabby. I've never really fiddled with the GD libs myself, so I don't know if it was a code error, or if they tend to be a bit buggy.

  • Loren Pechtel (unregistered)

The plane one doesn't belong. The aircraft is doing something that keeps it from tracking the satellite. No WTF.

  • Dude (unregistered) in reply to Vollhorst

No, Normal is flying ovor Kuba or other warzone

  • (cs)

That just means you need an abnormal aircraft to program movement.

It took me a while to see the WTF in the US Stock item. I guess I am not the only one to ignore images when reading regular news stories...

Oh, and the UK Motoring Online is standard UK Government procedure. They probably just misplaced the phone number on a commuter train, or perhaps they lost it in the post.

The plane one's fine, but the wording could be better - I've experienced it myself and it's oddly terrifying to be reassured by a machine that despite the way you're being thrown from one side of the cabin to the other everything is fine and there's no need to panic.

  • Anonymous Cow-Herd (unregistered)

I'm still not getting the finance story one. It might be a WTF if there were some reference to "cast away" or "Wilson" in the lede, along the lines of the issues involving former British Army chief Genereal Michael Jackson.

I'm totally with you but I'd spell unavailable correctly ;-) . What would be REALLY ironic is if that message appeared while it was plummeting towards the ground. I'd hardly call that normal.

I think they just write "normal" to ensure passengers that their channel isn't gone due to something abnormal.

The real WTF is that someone thinks that all channels should be available at all times in a freakin jet. I just flew Westjet last month, and yes, sometimes, you don't get a channel. And yes, that's the message. Why is it a WTF?

Someone uploading the wrong image is not a WTF. If there were some reference which an automated query got wrong (like a picture of the general showing up next to the Wonderland trial), it would be a WTF.
