I missed the 100 for the day, but I hope there is a disclaimer on the form saying that you won't sell our addresses to some spammer. With the recent change to the site I wouldn't be so sure :(

Anyway you should enlarge the words and put it on a shirt so I can give it to some of my co-workers because they are definitely "worse than failure." Actually I wouldn't put the sticker or logo on anything that I own cause it sounds like I am implying that I am "worse than failure."

    God I hate that name.

    SadnessWTF:
I liked the daily WTF because it had a cool edge to it - kind of a gritty in the trenches type meme. ... It's not completely fair for people to say that since we're getting this for "free" we're not entitled to an opinion after all our submissions drive this site don't they?
Indeed, our submissions drive the site, and we're welcome to take them elsewhere. We could even start your own site called "All Your Base Are Belong To WTF O RLY?" to make it extra meme-ish. But that doesn't mean that the submissions make us entitled to dictate what Alex does with the site. Don't get me wrong, if Alex started charging for it, I'd pitch a fit and leave. I don't think anyone is saying that you're unentitled to an opinion on this, I just think that those who are saying they'll never come back because of a name change are being absurd. Judge the site on its content, not its (admittedly sucky) new name. Also, I've said it before and it bears repeating, the name change will allow the site to get through more content filters, which means more of us can read it at work instead of dealing with the WTFs we've been assigned to fix.

As one of the lucky ones to get a sticker, the page (when it was up) did say that address will only be used to mail the sticker.

Some adds are OK, even some inline affiliate base links are acceptable, but changing the brand to attract grandma is just stupid. If you are made uncomfortable by people joking about the size of dead peoples wangs, then don't hang out in morticians bars. If you dont like to hear about tazering drunks, don't hang out in cop bars. If "What the fuck?" is somehow insulting to you, grow the fuck up, or just dont hang around the Daily What The Fuck.
This is indeed a sad day for IT. Seriously.
Sure, there are some petty asshats who left only because of the name change, but to others, it is a symptom of this shift to appease the masses. Its a niche market, and you are pissing off the niche to get more customers. It should come as no surprise that the niche is a bit miffed.
Ahem, speaking of lame, trendy euphemisms... ;-)
  • (cs)

Let me help y'all out with this.

    1. It's his website, not yours.

    2. If you're not paying the bills, then you can HAVE an opinion, but that's not the same as having a RIGHT to one.

    3. He didn't name it "New Coke," which is certainly heading in the right direction.

    4. All of you that think it's cool, or neat, or [fill in the blank] to insert vulgarity into just about everything because it's edgy or Web 2.0 or whatever you think it is--real commerce doesn't work that way, and that's why you never see anything from Apple named that way. Think about it. iPod or iPud? You be the judge--but grow up first.

Pretty pathetic that so many douchebags care enough about what a website is named to stop visiting it. The only people who have that kind of time on their hands to piss and moan are middle-aged virgins who still live in their parents' basements anyway, so no big loss. Seriously, get a life and don't browse it anymore if you hate it that much. I, for one, will continue to read no matter what it's called. Keep up the good work!

ive read a few pages of replies in this thread and the name change thread. i've seen many replies like yours lashing out at all the people who say they are going to stop visiting, but i don't recall anyone actually saying they're going to stop visiting, so WTF are you talking about?

  • Tom Ritchford (unregistered)

People are such whiners at times!

  • (cs)

The sticker ist very nice :-) It is also very considerate that one can cleanly cut of the lame lower part.

  • anon (unregistered)

  • Jason Scott (unregistered)

Implying people are going to stop reading the website just because the new name is stupid and a sellout is setting up a strawman. The fact is, a bunch of us think of it is a stupid change.

It's your place, your daily effort to maintain, and you do what you got to do. Just don't sit around thinking it was a brilliant "upsell" from the way things were.

And keep the stickers, just like I'll keep your RSS feed.

  • swapo (unregistered)

As I am one of the few that like the new name (I also liked the old one though) I'd like to get a sticker. But I don't want to force you to send too many to old europe ;-)

Well, I would just fill the form in order to check if there is no small letter anounce saying "US only" or something like that, but that would be like accepting I like the new name, which I don´t... But a Digital Donkey cup would be terrific

  • Brady Kelly (unregistered)

Well, I'm glad to see that Alex actually does still have balls. Balls enough to issue stickers in the new name.

    No thanks.

  • Kim (unregistered)

well, alex, if you have to change the title, you might want to consider changing the subtitle as well, such that the word "perversions" disappears from it and the site passes our obscenity filters. just suggesting...

I really couldn't care less about the name of the site. I love reading the stories and I enjoy the prose. I work in as a software developer and I like to feel that I am not alone.

But what has concerned me is how quick people are to attack code that they don't quite understand. I see bad code all the time, you just have to live with it. At best you can still talk to the developer that wrote it and try to explain why its bad. Perhaps the developer will explain that he didn't understand a design pattern or it was actually a proof of concept that management pushed into production or management asked him to develop it and he was actually a DBA. Whatever the reason you don't have to be an asshole.

I believe these are people are the same people who would attack something like this page changing its name. I bet if you changed it to Linux0r0wnzW1nd0wz they wouldn't complain. These people lack substance so why do people care that they are leaving. Come to the think about it the name should have been changed a long time ago.

I was initially unmoved by the name change, but having had time for it to sink in, I think that the name is cleverly chosen. Ostensibly, it's "Worse Than Failure", but the discerning reader (not to mention the loyal reader) will notice that it shares an acronym with another phrase common on the Interwebs.

What I don't understand is asshats like you that don't seem to understand that it's none of your business why Alex chose to change the name. It's his damn site! If he wants to call it "JeffWarnicaSucks.com" it's his choice. Regardless of the reason why, it's his choice.

People like you are the ones who could win a million dollars in a free raffle, but would bitch because they didn't like the denomination of the bills they received.

Although it is true that no one here pays Alex directly to be able to read the articles and comment, if enough people leave, I'm sure this would put a noticable dent in the ad revenue he receives.

Alex has mentioned before that he makes very little from the ad revenue. I don't think that had anything to do with the change.

    Krakhan:
If he wanted to leave out the profanity, he should have just called it "thedailywhatthe", or something, since I usually just react with "what the?!" when seeing the snippets.

So just continue to react the same way. What difference does it make what the site name is, as long as the content stays the same?

Okay, this is extremely childish! It's even worse than failure. It's one big WTF.

I never knew that a name change could stir up so much hate?

Come on, it's just a bloody name. If you still want to call it dailywtf, who is Alex to stop you? But to stop visiting a site because you don't like the name, well then just go. Don't bother the rest of us about it!

If you want to be childish and petty, then you should not be here in the first place.

This site's purpose is to showcase strange happenings in IT. And most of those are worse than failures.

And who cares that Alex gave up a (in your view) bullshit reason. It's his site, and he can do anything he wants with it. If he wanted to call it: "The IT Banana Republic" that would also be good. And perhaps also cover what it purveys. A name change is at least better, than just to completely stop updating the site. Or was that what you wanted?

Captcha: doom... well not for this site. And this user will still visit Worse Than Failure. And if I can get a sticker, I'd be proud to show it.

*You = all those petty people claiming that a name change is detrimental for the site.

You know, I didn't mind the name change at first. After thinking about it, I'm quite disappointed. The reason why this site truly resonated with me is that ALL developers have run into that "what the fuck" moment. I've looked at crazy/stupid code, and the first thing that comes to mind is indeed "what the fuck". Not "oh man this is worse than failure".

It's not going to stop me reading right away. But it does break that special feeling that the admin of this site truly understands what developers deal with on a regular basis.

Very well said! I am not going to stop reading either...but the name of the site really doesn't convey the same meaning anymore for developers.

How long 'til the URL redirect stop working anyway?
