Oh yeah. For as much as I would like to like Linux, I absolutely HATE it when that happens.

This notion of "Let's output something to stderr and then halt the program" is so deeply embedded in the entire community – right down to the graphical toolkits like GTK.

They really should know better than printing the error to a channel that will in all normal use cases go to nothingness.

Or all the application programmers hoped that the desktop environments would build some kind of wrapper that displays stderr when the applications exits with an error, but they never did – and nobody cares. sigh

Windows will be much better though once they introduce a proper kill -9 that will kill anything you want to without it trying to fight back.

"Plug and exist" is useful. I want to plug in a disk drive or other device and for it to be available immediately without me having to "mount" it. I don't want anything to start "playing" it or trying to "manage" its media for me though.

Many of these features can be disabled but they don't make it easy for you. Of course I guess some of it is just annoying software.

Fine, you really want to get into it: explorer (not iexplorer) crashes far too frequently. It's not constant, but having administered a few thousand 2000, XP and Vista machines, it happens way more than it should in XP. It's a window manager, it should never crash. I don't have as much experience with Linux or Mac, in that I use them at home not at work, but I've never once seen or heard of the window manager itself crashing 20 minutes is a bit of an exaggeration, but long boot times have plagued Windows for some time now, and XP was especially bad. It's partially a presentation thing, ie don't show me the damn desktop until I can use it. However, many side by side comparisons have been done, and on the same hardware, XP takes much longer to boot than Linux or Mac Windows Help has long had some sections that are not installed by default, and have to be downloaded to view. You actually cannot install all help files during OS installation, though you can put the disk back in and install them manually after the initial install is completed. You can't seriously be claiming that NTFS is a good file system. File systems that don't require manual defrag have been out for decades now, and Windows is still behind the times. This was supposed to be fixed in Vista with the DB driven File System, but was scrapped and hasn't been mentioned since. XP prior to SP1 had notoriously buggy USB drivers, and would routinely BSOD on plugging in any sort of USB peripheral, including mice. SP1 improved the situation greatly, and SP2 fixed it, but it did happen (and well after Windows 98). As for the firewall, like I said, you would have served yourself well to pull back a bit on the hyperbole. Yes, it was turned on by default in XP SP2, which came out about 7 years after Windows 98. The Admin requirement is partially the fault of poor 3rd Party Software development, but it's partially Microsoft's fault as well. They pretty much required the practice for decades, and even as they slowly lifted the requirements they did nothing to actively discourage the practice. Automatically creating the first user as an Admin and encouraging users to be constantly logged in as Admin just made it easy for 3rd Party Devs to continue their crappy practices, and now 10 years later we're still feeling the effects, and probably will be for another 5. As for the backdoor, it's hard to claim deliberate insertion of backdoors, but if it wasn't a deliberate backdoor, ActiveX was just the dumbest piece of software engineering of all time.

TRWTF is that we're arguing about decades old OSes and ignoring the current state of both Windows and Linux.

It's this kind of technological evangelism that kills me. There is no one tool for the job. Some OSes do certain things better than others.

But, when all you know how to use is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

(Some explanation for the hammer and nail analogy in case it's not clear to the non English speakers here: All software is a tool. We use tools to accomplish tasks faster and easier than without the tools. (Ever have to drive a nail with a rock?) But if you only know one tool, you think everything can be done with it.)

    Linux:

TRWTF is programs crashing with no error messages. TRWTF is kernel panics from plugging in USB devices. TRWTF is having to manage complex config files just to play a game or run a web site TRWTF is having to compile...ANYTHING. TRWTF is shitty piss poor drivers. TRWTF is Linux.

OK I know you're a flaming troll, but just in case some innocent bystanders are fooled by your tirade, I just had to step in and say I've been using Linux about 12 hours a day for the past several years and I've never experienced any of your gripes.

P.S. you don't run a web site, you view it. If you're letting the whole goddamn internet have control of your browser, you're begging to get raped. Regardless of OS.
