Grab your coat and get your hat, leave your worry at the doorstep Just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street Can't you hear that pitter pat and that happy tune is your step Life can be so sweet on the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade with those blues on parade But I'm not afraid 'cause this rover, crossed over
If I never had a cent I'll be as rich as Rockfeller Gold dust at my feet on the sunny side of the street
With those blues on parade Because this rover, it crossed over
If I never had a cent I'll be as loaded as old Rockfeller With that gold dust 'round my feet On the sunny side of the street On the side, at that side of the street that is sunny -J. McHugh/D. Fields

Okay, so you've proved you haven't used Windows since Windows 98. Well done.

I have a nice full feeling.
That feeling you get right before you have to take a poo.
This one's for the record books.

TRWTF is that you're willing to pay for an operating system that's worse in every way than one you can get for free.

Eh, not really, everything in that list is valid through Windows XP SP1, most are valid through XP SP3. Very few are valid through Windows 7 though, so a lack of hyperbole would have served Anon pretty well. By claiming Windows 98, he just looks like a moron.

Yeah. It's just a bad way of putting it. I'm going to guess there was some translation involved in that error message but it doesn't rise to the level of a WTF.

Bullshit. It just demonstrates the ignorance of Borken and his inability to set up Windows.
TRWTF is that explorer crashes have always been very rare. TRWTF is that Windows never takes 20 minutes to boot up unless it's riddled with malware (which would be your fault for letting it on there in the first place) TRWTF is that help has never required internet connectivity. TRWTF is what the hell is wrong with disk defrag? And if you don't like the utility that ships with Windows, there are plenty of alternatives. TRWTF is I never seen a blue screen from plugging in a mouse. The default Windows mouse drivers have worked with every mouse I've ever tried. If you're getting a blue screen then something is seriously wrong with your mouse/computer. TRWTF is that the Firewall has been on by default since XP SP2 TRWTF is you've had the option to not run as admin since XP (maybe even 95/98 I don't remember), it's just bad software that demands admin rights when it doesn't need it. This has got much better with Vista / 7 TRWTF is do you have a reference for Microsoft deliberately leaving back doors in their OS? TRWTF is that Borken is a troll and I've wasted my time feeding him.

Must have been a few years since you've tried Linux. In the last 3 years, I have never failed to be able to run a Windows program using Wine.
As for availability of quality software...that's never stopped Mac users.

This notion of "Let's output something to stderr and then halt the program" is so deeply embedded in the entire community – right down to the graphical toolkits like GTK.
They really should know better than printing the error to a channel that will in all normal use cases go to nothingness.
Or all the application programmers hoped that the desktop environments would build some kind of wrapper that displays stderr when the applications exits with an error, but they never did – and nobody cares. sigh

Not any better than Linux:
TRWTF is programs crashing with no error messages. TRWTF is kernel panics from plugging in USB devices. TRWTF is having to manage complex config files just to play a game or run a web site TRWTF is having to compile...ANYTHING. TRWTF is shitty piss poor drivers. TRWTF is Linux.

Dear anon,
In case you can’t tell, this is a grown-up place. The fact that you don't understand file systems clearly shows that you’re too young and too stupid to be using operating systems.
Go away and grow up.

Windows will be much better though once they introduce a proper kill -9 that will kill anything you want to without it trying to fight back.
"Plug and exist" is useful. I want to plug in a disk drive or other device and for it to be available immediately without me having to "mount" it. I don't want anything to start "playing" it or trying to "manage" its media for me though.
Many of these features can be disabled but they don't make it easy for you. Of course I guess some of it is just annoying software.
Admin
Newsflash! It's 2010, and we're up to 2.6 now. Your objections are similar to the fellow talking about Windows 98 earlier.
Admin
What we really need is a car analogy to understand the difference between Windows and Linux and Mac so that all the non-technical people posting can understand.
Admin
Fine, you really want to get into it: explorer (not iexplorer) crashes far too frequently. It's not constant, but having administered a few thousand 2000, XP and Vista machines, it happens way more than it should in XP. It's a window manager, it should never crash. I don't have as much experience with Linux or Mac, in that I use them at home not at work, but I've never once seen or heard of the window manager itself crashing 20 minutes is a bit of an exaggeration, but long boot times have plagued Windows for some time now, and XP was especially bad. It's partially a presentation thing, ie don't show me the damn desktop until I can use it. However, many side by side comparisons have been done, and on the same hardware, XP takes much longer to boot than Linux or Mac Windows Help has long had some sections that are not installed by default, and have to be downloaded to view. You actually cannot install all help files during OS installation, though you can put the disk back in and install them manually after the initial install is completed. You can't seriously be claiming that NTFS is a good file system. File systems that don't require manual defrag have been out for decades now, and Windows is still behind the times. This was supposed to be fixed in Vista with the DB driven File System, but was scrapped and hasn't been mentioned since. XP prior to SP1 had notoriously buggy USB drivers, and would routinely BSOD on plugging in any sort of USB peripheral, including mice. SP1 improved the situation greatly, and SP2 fixed it, but it did happen (and well after Windows 98). As for the firewall, like I said, you would have served yourself well to pull back a bit on the hyperbole. Yes, it was turned on by default in XP SP2, which came out about 7 years after Windows 98. The Admin requirement is partially the fault of poor 3rd Party Software development, but it's partially Microsoft's fault as well. They pretty much required the practice for decades, and even as they slowly lifted the requirements they did nothing to actively discourage the practice. Automatically creating the first user as an Admin and encouraging users to be constantly logged in as Admin just made it easy for 3rd Party Devs to continue their crappy practices, and now 10 years later we're still feeling the effects, and probably will be for another 5. As for the backdoor, it's hard to claim deliberate insertion of backdoors, but if it wasn't a deliberate backdoor, ActiveX was just the dumbest piece of software engineering of all time.
TRWTF is that we're arguing about decades old OSes and ignoring the current state of both Windows and Linux.
Admin
It's this kind of technological evangelism that kills me. There is no one tool for the job. Some OSes do certain things better than others.
But, when all you know how to use is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
(Some explanation for the hammer and nail analogy in case it's not clear to the non English speakers here: All software is a tool. We use tools to accomplish tasks faster and easier than without the tools. (Ever have to drive a nail with a rock?) But if you only know one tool, you think everything can be done with it.)

Windows: a Dodge Ram (looks nice, has some truck features, but really not made for real work) Mac: Golf Cart (quiet, easy to use [only one pedal!], but I wouldn't try to take it on the freeway)
Linux: Chevy Silverado (bullet-proof, can handle anything you throw at it, inexpensive)
Admin
Okay, the problem isn't so much what people are driving, it's that most people driving are Asian.
Admin
Great, so now you're going to turn an OS flame-war into a truck flame-war. The only people more passionate that computer geeks with their OS's are good-old boys with their trucks. Plus, they all have guns.

LOL at the Mac/golf cart analogy.

I have used every version of Windows since 3.0, and I have never seen Explorer crash in any version since 2000. Lucky?
Or else I just know my systems, and I know what I'm installing. I usually build my own computers. When I "help" someone set up a new computer, I either reformat and reinstall only the necessary stuff (and not all of the shovelware) or else I remove most or all of the shovelware. Still, shovelware can crash and slow things down, but it doesn't usually bring down Windows Explorer (not since Windows XP SP2, anyway).

Tomorrow will return at 6 am.
Back in the 70s, when a certain David McCallum TV show was pre-empted one night, I heard the station announcer say that "The Invisible Man will not be seen tonight".
Some things never change.

Perhaps you're just not smart enuff to operate a windows based computer.. Seems like the rest of the work has not the same troubles. Perhaps you should browse less porn or get a etch-a-sketch

P.S. you don't run a web site, you view it. If you're letting the whole goddamn internet have control of your browser, you're begging to get raped. Regardless of OS.
