    Frist mug!

  • (cs)

    Sconed mug!!

  • (cs)

OK, installation went smoothly, for our very customized JBoss installation. I doubt they'll receive any data since we're in a pretty tight network though.

By the way, I think they are suffering theDailyWTF effect:

Oops! We ran into a server error. Please try that again. If the error persists, please contact support.

So, i registered, installed, and all, but never ever I was asked my address or anything. In fact, I was asked for my zip code only...are they assuming I am in the US?

They probably have access to THE DATABASE, so if they have your IP, they already know everything they need.

  • grabah (unregistered)

when we will know who got the mugs? (and when are they arriving?)

  • Eric (unregistered)

Looks like a very useful tool - was very easy to set up!

Also worndering how they are going to send a mug without address though...

  • Mugger (unregistered)

So can we order the mug for a price without installing the software?

  • Wody (unregistered)

All I'm getting is 'I'm sorry, an error has occured.' No way to sign up!

  • Andee (unregistered)

I'm in, got my app set up! off we go!

  • Yanman (unregistered)

A mug? how smug! I don't have a servert, you pervert. I can rhyme because I hate lime. It doesn't make sense but in my defense I pulled out the plug

    Mugger:

Maybe borderline illegal (if you start selling them, for instance), but you can always get the mug you want for a price, see zazzle.com and others

  • Erayd (unregistered)

Looks like a rather handy product, although I doubt I'll end up paying for it, as I already understand where my app is struggling... it just needs a better CPU, there's no way around that!

One problem I did notice with it is it seems incapable of reporting which file the actual load is occurring in - it's reporting everything as /index.php, but index.php is a three-line file that includes a file, instantiates a class, and calls one method. It also can't report which URLs are heavily loaded if you're using PATH_INFO, as it only seems to support reporting on the query string.

That's funny, considering Alex specifically stated this time it's for all around the world, not just US

  • Pentium100 (unregistered)

OK, I got it working. Seems interesting. Anyway, when I was signing up, it only asked for my postal code (not ZIP code, so I guess it determines the country by IP), but not my address. I wonder how they will be able to send the mug.

Is there a minimum load requirement on the server? Mine only collects stats (cacti), so it won't have a huge load on it (on the other hand, when the poller (or the graph) starts running , they take a few seconds to finish).

    my thoughts exactly.

I can't use this. Our production servers are in secure network with no connection to the internet.

  • Jakob H. Poulsen (unregistered)

I'm very curious to see how the mug is going to end up here, from my "DK-9000" postal code alone. :D

  • grabah (unregistered)

is this just a scam? how will they send the mugs?!

  • robert (unregistered)

Just registered! Let come the Mug to The Netherlands!

  • justsomedudette (unregistered)

OK I'm clearly being thick here but when I click the download and deploy button nothing downloads I just get the set-up page. What am I missing?

  • Kaitnieks (unregistered)

No love for PHP on Windows :(

  • Stuart (unregistered)

"I'm sorry, an error has occured."

If they can't sort out a simple form like that, or spell their error messages correctly, it doesn't fill me with confidence in their product.

  • (cs)

Hehehe... Looks like they copied and pasted the install instructions for different Linux distros. PHP with Debian instructions have a section on using "yum", which goes on to tell you how to use "apt-get".

Also, I'm thinking these messages mean I'm not getting a mug: 2011-09-22 11:36:09 [3971/connector] warning: RPM call 'connect' failed with code 417 2011-09-22 11:36:16 [3971/connector] warning: RPM call 'connect' failed with code 417 2011-09-22 11:36:22 [3971/connector] warning: RPM call 'connect' failed with code 417

Addendum (2011-09-22 07:46): Well, there's about 10 minutes of my life I won't get back. Uninstalling since it apparently can't connect for 417 reasons it doesn't want to tell me.

I can see why they're advertising via DailyWTF... I searched support for "code 417" and got no results.

No Windows PHP support. No custom framework support.

Technically, the New Relic agent is installed.

C'mon man, don't you recognise the past tense of the verb "occure"?

I occure, you occure, he / she / it occures, we occure, etc.

    I am occuring

Well, I'm installed and wondering how the address issue will be solved as well.

  • Excelsior (unregistered)

I think I got my answer and you have to create a web application.

Good thing I'm developer, I now have to cross my fingers to get the Mug. I want it so bad since at least 2 years.

  • Patrick from New Relic (unregistered)

Hi everyone: Patrick from New Relic here. For all you that signed up, we will send an email with a link to an address form. Please know that you have to have access to your server to deploy the code for our service and be eligible for the mug. The instructions appear after you signed up.

Thanks! Be on the lookout for that email in a few hours when our marketing guys get to the office in San Francisco!

    Thanks!

No big deal. Practically every single application I've come across has "an error has occured" in it somewhere. I'm beginning to think it's a meme like "a maze of twisty passages, all alike"

I get it! Today it is a marketing WTF, right?

I clicked your link. You got a response to your ad! Hurray! Now you want to acquire another customer with minimal friction, right?

Ummm. No software on that page. Nor can I find (in several page views) whether it runs on Linux or just Winblows. (I see more useful info on this subject in the comments above than on the site itself.)

Oh well, let me try "Sign Up" http://newrelic.com/signup and maybe part way through it will ask me which version I want to download... probably that's when they'll tell me they don't like stinking Linux users.

Wait, what? The "sign up" page doesn't have any place for me to sign up! Just more snazzy graphics and exciting bullets, trying to sell me. But I'm already sold! I said "sign up" didn't I?

Oh, maybe in addition to "sign up" I have to "sign in". https://rpm.newrelic.com/ Nope! Have to already have an email and password. But no fear, if I don't have one, there's a link to... um... sign up.

OK at this point there is no way I'm wasting time installing anything, but let's see how deep the shit really is. Sign up.

Yep, same page I already saw: http://newrelic.com/signup

Yet, even though it is the same URL, somehow the link was displayed with the look of an unvisited page, rather than an already-seen page. Don't know how you managed that one.

I see this level of incompetence a lot. Usually, when I bother to debug it, it boils down to "it looks/works great on my computer" syndrome. You forgot: other people don't have your computer. It's a world-wide web. There are standards. Follow them.

Sorry to chill your party, but if you really want marketers to know what a potential customer experienced, so they can do better, you won't delete this comment.

For those who are on the fence, I can say that the performance of the TDWTF mug is superb. I drank a cup of coffee out of mine fifteen minutes ago. It's a solid, heavy-duty mug and the flow rate is exceptional.

  • Виртулис (unregistered)

Okay, I signed up and deployed (really took just a few minutes, so no idea what's the complaints about, maybe a pebkac?:), although I happened to use the default signup form, so I'm not sure I entered PAULA_BEAN.

Dear New Relic guys, could you enter it for me? I promise to seriously consider paying you some money if you do! My postcode was "LV-1055".

And on a completely unrelated note, the comment form seems to have problems with cyrillic nicknames. WTF, TDWTF? It's 2011, no?

So, you're saying it worked fine on your computer, therefore, it probably works on all computers? Have you tested that assumption?
  • Katrina Swales (unregistered)

Well I signed up, and running this on a smallish production server I have, lets see how it goes! and looking forward to email about my mug.

  • (cs)

    Hmm...

x86 version only - this does not work on my server :-(

  • Виртулис (unregistered) in reply to Larry

In your comment you seem to whine about the website, not software. Most websites tend to work the same way on all computers, except maybe if you're using IE or some crippling addons like NoScript or Adblock.

For example, if my nickname is loaded from a cookie as "Виртулис" in Chrome on Linux, it will probably also be "Виртулис" in any other browser too.

    Hey everyone,

Sorry for the problems with getting your addresses. We had a slight issue with our marketing automation system this morning. Please visit http://try.newrelic.com/tdwtfoffer.html to give us your address so you can get your mugs.

    Cheers,

You're right. It's too bad that these small companies run mostly by developers who spend a large amount of their time developing the software (and trying to market) can't live up to the standards set up by your perfectly written and perfectly marketed software product.

What was the link to that again?
