    Someone Else:
A cablemodem modulates data onto a carrier that is then sent over regular television coax. A TV station modulates the video and audio signal over the same coax, where your TV demodulates it to produce the picture and sound.

Thank you for your replies ... you do have a point there.

However I was under the impression that modern fibre-to-the-node based cable tv system were purely digital in form... simply due to the fact that they data carry.

I suppose the question is if the modern "digital" cable systems are really old fashioned modulation/demodulation, or if they're using some kind of digital signal multiplexing. A mix of the two I suspect.

I think I shall admit error simply on the basis of insufficient knowledge on the subject.

And if you go one click East in streetview in Google Maps from the no-13th-floor image, you see that the freeway also has a well-defined approach for a landing from the air as well:

"I found this on a box we received at work," rbowes worte on the SideBar, "my question is, if you aren't supposed to scan the barcode, what ARE you supposed to do?"

    Open the box?

Am I the only one who has noticed that Google Street View is encouraging a new generation of children to stand in the middle of freeways on a little green circle and look around at the cars about to run them over?

Oh, and just a few hundred feet away, it looks like someone on a street corner is being abducted by aliens: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=houston,+tx&sll=33.001448,-96.786879&sspn=0.09185,0.096817&g=houston,+tx&ie=UTF8&t=h&layer=c&cbll=29.759926,-95.362485&panoid=SzX-DohPdAXPKV_con8tjQ&cbp=12,194.66659196199498,,0,-8.475083332174358&ll=29.786997,-95.630853&spn=0,359.995193&z=18&iwloc=addr

Apparently this whole area has some paranormal link to strange happenings.

The best part of the no-13th-floor image is that I immediately recognized the office park. If you're curious, that office park is home to multiple oil companies; I believe BP is currently the largest occupant. Enron, alas, was not headquartered there.

So, how many days of a road trip was that? Also, did you get us any souvenirs?

The barcode reminds me of one I found in a relatively recent Sun 1U server. There's a chunk of foam rubber that ensures a good seal between a fan duct and the heatsink. I noticed that it had a small barcode label attached with only the text "FOAM" printed below. Thinking that there must be some higher meaning to this sticker, I grabbed a scanner from the lab, plugged it into my PC, and zapped the sticker.

    The barcode decodes to "FOAM".

Wow. Those directions are actually from the vicinity of Stockton, KS (here, to be specific). Clearly Stockton doesn't have any Sears stores, or perhaps the one in New Brunswick is just THE BEST SEARS STORE EVER!

I'm embarrassed by how long I spent figuring out where that route was coming from. Prowling the wilds of Kansas through Google Maps...

That last one is fail. dude pulled up directions from outside chicago to NJ... where's the fail in that? The only failure here is a PEBKAC error.
See my above comment. The directions are from a little bitty place in Kansas. Perhaps your fail was in thinking it originated in Chicago. Some of us actually nerd out over this sort of thing, TYVM!

I don't suppose someone who knows that area could display a map of those directions ... I'm kinda curious.

Sorry, a moment ago there were only about 3 comments, not three pages of comments.
