We are missing a folder named "TO_BE_DELETED" on the M: drive.

Do you know what happened to it?

Why yes I do; it's been moved to the Wastebasket, which has been carted to the Dumpster which was emptied and taken to the dump. If you would like to retrieve your files, go to the city landfill and start digging.

I think that folder got deleted.

I'm sure that is due to the translation driver.

The printer one reminds me of a user I had at my last job a few years ago. Somehow, this guy wound up with a printout in French, which he could not read since he didn't speak French. To this day, I really struggle with what possibly could have led to this guy coming up with the solution that he did. So first he scanned the document to a PDF. We had no OCR, so he now had a picture of his document as a PDF. Then he opened the PDF, dug around in his preferences on Adobe Reader, and managed to change the language of Adobe to French. Then he called me over and said his computer was broken. Nothing I said could convince him how his plan could not possibly work. Eventually I (somewhat sarcastically) said "Well, even if the program somehow worked like that, you changed your language from English to French, so wouldn't that translate from English to French, not the other way around?" For some reason, that logic actually sunk in, so he promptly went in and changed his language back to English and said "See, it still doesn't work, it's broken". Around that time, I just gave up and left.

The real WTF in the TO_BE_DELETED item is the fact that someone had the nerve to delete the folder. I think it is a pretty valid way of collecting stuff that may, or may not, be deleted. Maybe the guys using the folder intended to review the contents before really deleting the folder (or even only the contents)

  • (cs) in reply to Jacques

Votre imprimateur vous a-t-il traduit ça?

I did the same TO_BE_DELETED thing once. I made a directory on a network drive where I put the files I was planning to delete from my own Computer and I was going to make an archive of it. Yes, I used TO_BE_DELETED instead of BACKUP and I didn't understand why my directory was actually deleted by someone who needed some extra space.

  • thedoormouse (unregistered) in reply to Tom

I get that a staging folder to delete files is a dangerous thing to dump, but I had a PM a couple of jobs ago that complained that their recycle bin was emptied and they needed their critical documents back. I noted that, the recycle bin folder is not on the backup list and that the recycle bin in computer or real life, was a bad place to store files.

She still swore to the day she left that we emptied the folder.

"Then I noticed the top of the shelf didn't have any bolts or screws through it. How was that light affixed? I gave it a tug. Then a firmer one. With a grunt, I managed to finally pull it free from the shelf-bottom ... " ... whereupon I discovered that it had been affixed with crazy glue, as I tore part of the shelf-bottom with it.

At that point I would have pointed out that it obviously still wasn't working because he scanned the document in English. I would then try to keep things going for as long as I could for the purpose of... odd... I can't find a translation for schadenfreude.

Ha, no. French people do not actually speak French. What they speak is a ghastly bastardization of proper grammar, so heinous that no English-speaker would ever conceive of it as being a legitimate language.

Computers can do anything. Anything at all. Even the impossible. They can read your mind and know what you meant, even though you gave no clue to the computer because you didn't have one in the first place. They are, in short, fucking absolute and total magic.

They only time they don't anticipate your most befuddled desire is when those darn sys admins stop playing video games for five minutes so they can disconnect some vital doodad just to mess with people, because they can.

Does anyone know how I can set my display driver to English? There's a whole bunch of nonsense on this page.

  • Matt B (unregistered)

The TO_BE_DELETED folder reminds of our users who treat the Deleted Items folder in the email as a storage.

I had a user who kept saying her Outlook was slow. I took a look and saw she had 10,000 items in her Deleted Items. I said, okay we'll just delete those. "NOOOOOOOO! I have emails in their that I reference!"

Seriously? Make a subfolder! I had a friend who's boss would tell users that "You don't treat a real trashcan as a reference box do you?"

Haven't you been paying attention? Display drivers can't take care of that for you. That's why you have to print it out!

Really? When you put something in your trash/recycle bin on a GUI desktop it archives them to a network drive before removing them from the local machine? I didn't know that. I better go test it out with all my critical files.

The amazing print driver section reminded me of a BC comic strip joke from years ago. Peter was trying to sell something to Curls that, "Slices, dices, chops, combs your hair, ... blah blah blah."

Curls asked, "Will it stop a stampeding herd of water buffalo?"

    Peter, perplexed: "No."

Curls: "Then what good is it?"

So the question of the day: "What good is a print driver that won't stop a stampeding herd of water buffalo?"

  • (cs) in reply to Gurth

Yeah, but you control when you delete your "TO_BE_DELETED" folder.

I was working for a gov't office and one of the structure inspectors asked me where his files went. He was either storing them in the trash/recycle or in c:/TEMP (forget which), and the system had automatically cleared it. Neither of those folders are backed up (for reasons obvious to you or I).

He was completely livid, "I ALWAYS store documents there and have never had a problem!!" I asked him if he stored his important paper documents in the paper recycling box in his office pointing at mine, "Look all my documents I put there this week are still there! Sure there is space in my filing cabinet, but I can just throw them in there right? I mean I've been working here months and it hasn't been emptied yet. I'm sure if the janitor finally comes along he'll realize that's where I'm storing my important documents."

I don't think that guy ever asked for help again.

  • (cs)

For such ridiculous requests, one should get them to ask it through email.

At a former job we had cardboard recycle boxes under our desks. A co-worker had two. He wouldn't empty the first until the second was full. He figured that if he hadn't dug something out of it by the time the second was full he never would, so it was now safe to empty. But never before. So yes, some people DO treat their trashcan as a reference box.

If the files may not be deleted, then you shouldn't put them in a folder called "TO_BE_DELETED."

Also, just based on the story, we don't know that the person who deleted the folder isn't the person who created it.
