Um... I can't speak for Maurits, but to me "grab" has a number of definitions, most of which are summed up on Wordnet. I'm really not sure what you're implying when you say nothing "seems to fit".
What I think he's implying is either your usage of "grab" is way too wide, or common usage of the word is much more narrow. Either way, you're trying to fit a half-dollar in a dime slot.
Grab means "to seize" or "to fetch" (common usage). Obviously this is the meaning that galgorah intended.

Grab also means "to grasp" or "to clutch" (also common usage), which is the meaning I was purposely imposing while completely aware that it wasn't what galgorah intended. In that context, it is rarely appropriate to grab a lady.

So are we just being super serious, or did we wake up on the slightly more pedantic side of the bed this morning?

While this is a wonderful plug-in, I suspect that for some languages, the functionality of "submitting to TDWTF" should be combined with the "save" function to simplify matters.

It seems to me that this would be a great time saver. In some cases (Paula Bean comes to mind), ANY save in ANY language might qualify.

Still another addition would be to take an online test to determine if the user is qualified to separate the functions.

The drawback to this is that TDWTF would be swamped with VERY GOOD submissions. Oh well, live and learn!

The only people who use emacs are those stuck in a timewarp who are convinced that, in the last 25 years of human progress, not a single improvement has been made in programming environments, and character based editors are still the cream of the crop. So it's okay to ostracise them.

I'm not a big emacs user - I think it would help if I were part octopus - but I prefer to do my editing in vi, not because I'm somehow opposed to progress but because I find that I work best when I can do everything from the keyboard, and that's vi. The mouse is a lovely device if you don't know how to find your way around a program, but I find it slows me down and breaks my train of thought. So, vi - the command set is easy enough to learn, and it's actually not that hard to get used to breaking into the ed stuff - easier than keeping emacs from breaking out into a spontaneous musical version of the gnu manifesto or some other weird and unnecessary behavior.

Oh, sorry, were you trying to be clever and snide? Sorry, dude. Try this:

Yeah, man, those emacs kids are sure dumb. Dumb as rocks - they use stuff that's old. Like C and stuff. Think they're smart with all their knowing stuff and stuff. Heh, what losers.

    Better?

No, there have been plenty of improvements in emacs.

and character based editors are still the cream of the crop

Your editor is still character based, it just has useless glitz and can't run over SSH.

So it's okay to ostracise them.

As soon as you catch up. About 18 years ago, when vi was released, we implemented an M-x command to ostracize the unbelievers. Haven't really bothered updating it to handle the GUI kids, we'll wait until Visual Studio grows up and gets a better scripting language than VBScript.

You know what I am a resent convert to emacs about 2 mouths. I used to use IDEA and Eclipse...

Believe me when I say, I'll never look back.

As for the 25 years. Just think will Visual Studio or Eclipse be here in 25 years without the corporate money?

p.s. Yes I do use emacs for java.

I didn't state otherwise, just that improving emacs is a bit like improving the horse-and-cart when we're practically a shoo-in to have flying cars in a few years.

Say what you will, Visual Studio 2010 is far and away the best IDE there is at least for Windows development. It is one of the only Microsoft products one can confidently claim is world class. The debugger absolutely destroys any combination of tools I've found on Linux. It's the best thing they've released in maybe ever.

I've been using Linux for almost 15 years and have used vi fairly extensively. Since I use VS every day at work, I recently tried to use emacs to try and regain some street cred but I found it completely unbearable. I mean, come on, it's just abominable. It's like trying to play an MMORPG before WoW once you've experienced the polish of the WoW UI. Maybe I'm just not hardcore anymore, but user interfaces have moved on. How on earth do you put up with it?

I know the keyboard is faster in many respects. Amazingly, GUI-based progams like VS also allow you to use macros and keyboard shortcuts too! Just in case you didn't know. It's a funny argument that pops up, where the arguer for some reason assumes the ability to control a mouse is exclusive to the ability to control a keyboard.

Frankly, I have better things to do than to spend months of my life adapting myself to an awkward interface when VS is so much easier to use. And that's one thing the Linux community just does not get. People don't want to spend months dicking around trying to get something to work properly. I'm old enough now where I don't have that kind of time to devote to pointless stuff like that. It's just too hard to get started using emacs.

I think in 30 years when we're all hooked in to our computers via neural interfaces, there'll still be some crusty old emacs users utterly convinced on how much better their "experience" is, sadly oblivious to how polished and efficient modern IDEs are.

Sorry about the hijack... great plugin and great idea Alex!

I'm sure that when a direct neural interface is developed Emacs and Vim will be more suitable for it because they are note build with the point and click idea as a central pillar.

Don't worry, we don't use Source Safe! We use SourceGear Vault and thankfully 0% is written in VB.
