    Regarding the third Wednesday ...

It could be the Wednesday in the third week that is (at least partially) in the month. But then the Wednesday of the first week of that month would then have been in the previous month. I for one would have been distinctly unimpressed if I'd scheduled a meeting for the first Wednesday of every month, and had it occasionally occurring at the end of the previous month.

The WTF being that there is no slot for insertion at the top of the pad displayed -- it's at the bottom, the other way up.

And the last WTF: it usually initialises things to the same as the day you chose. If you selected the third Wednesday of the month, it should show that as an option (although in this case it should show "second Wednesday"). Just as it displays "13th of every month" because it's the 13th day of the month...

Bah, self checkout systems. I utterly hate those and avoid them like the plague. Don't know about you all but personally, if they expect me to do the cashier's job at a store, they better be paying me for it.

The card in the slot is great - that's clearly Tesco and those signs must be in all the stores like that - you couldn't correct it in the store as the text would be upside down if the sign was underneath the machine and orientated correctly, they must've had thousands of those printed. (I'm gutted that I haven't noticed that before - I use those machines in Tesco all the time... i'm a wtf - damn)

I guess the differences in how people interpret the last wtf are between those who regonise the program, have used it and therefore know what it should be doing and those (like me) who haven't.

I originally assumed that it is just static example text and assumed it's coincedence that the person choose the 13th of the month. (Oh well i'm part of the wtf again - damn).

Some days I feel like that, but if I only have a few things I know I can get through the self-checkout process quicker without having to deal with a greasy cashier with an attention span as long as the zits on his or her face. Beep-beep, swipe, rip, bag, gone. The thing that annoys me about the self-checkout devices usually is they're so goddamn slow. You swipe one thing, have the other one sitting there in the laser ready to go, and the machine just waits... waits... waits... beep. The machines at the cashier are faster, but still not fast enough:

Many years ago (my first legit job), I worked as a cashier at the townie store, and I used to try and ring people up as quickly as possible, I actually had people tell me "slow down and smile instead of looking so serious". I would wonder/ask "wtf, don't you wanna get out of here? I sure do" It was odd to me. Anyway, the register machines definitely had a limited speed at which they could process items through the scanner, slower than a human (that was paying attention) could swipe things through it. It's like old computers where you could type faster than it could draw the characters on the screen.

  • Frank (unregistered)

Nonsense. You won't find any evidence of lower prices due to self-checkout systems. Lower margins, MAYBE.

Self-checkout systems are nothing more than the express lanes of the future. They are MUCH faster than waiting in line if you only have a few items, but are otherwise completely worthless to the customer.

Actually, although it's hard to tell from the angle, I believe the size of the start button is the same as the other yellow buttons on the panel, it's just vertically orientated rather than horizontally. It's possible that people find it hard to read the text. Not that adding a sign with similarly orientated text is going to help that much.

It isn't outside the realm of reasonable to have chosen two very distinct days to do mailouts. Maybe they intentionally picked the third Wednesday and the 13th for the explicit reason of "they aren't the same day", thereby ensuring that they never have a day where they have to do the work of both mailouts on the same day.

Here in sweden, in self checout systems are implemented with a barcode scanner you take with you so you scan all the items as you put them in yoru backpack / bags. Then you just put the scanner in a socket and pay on the way out. Seems way better than having to stand and scan it at the actual checkout. ;)

  • (cs)

The Sainsbury's self-checkouts at the moment suffer from a few flaws of their own:

The "use your own bags" option often fails outright. Press "I want to use my own bags", wait for it to notice, put bags on bagging area like it asks, press done, scan and bag first item, have it say "unexpected item in bagging area" and need overriding by staff.

After using a self-checkout it prints off special offer vouchers which are NOT redeemable at self-checkouts. Why did they put the self-checkouts in if they don't want you to use them?

When you're done and going through the menu to tell it you want to pay by card, the voice is always one step behind the screen and what you're doing. By the time the screen tells you to insert your card the voice says "please select payment method". When the screen says "follow instructions on the chip and pin device" (which says "please wait" or "enter pin"), the voice says "please insert your card".

Hence the argument part. You try convincing the poorly trained staff that they can, in fact, take your card. Especially if the manager on duty is just as badly trained. It's not a problem in big stores, hotel, etc. But you try it at smaller stores. YMMV.
