I know exactly how Sharepoint comes to be implemented badly - I've seen it first-hand.

Person works at $COMPANY_1 where Sharepoint has been set up properly. What that person does not know is that setting up Sharepoint was not a "click.. click... click... job done" event, it was a carefully planned deployment which took a few months of work. As others have said, it provides you a framework but not a great deal else.

Person leaves $COMPANY_1, joins $COMPANY_2 which doesn't use sharepoint - or indeed anything analogous. Before long, person is clamouring for Sharepoint to be installed.

There may be some resistance initially, but it's soon crushed when someone with similar positive experience of Sharepoint (and, for that matter, similar ignorance of the work that went into turning it from a framework into a positive experience) joins $COMPANY_2 in a senior role. Reluctantly, the IT department installs Sharepoint. Not really knowing what they're installing, they simply click "next.. next.. next." then send out an email to everyone saying "There, job done. It's at this URL. Let us know if you run into any trouble."

The people who haven't used Sharepoint look at it briefly and think "Is that it? Not sure what all the fuss is about."

The people who have used a well-done Sharepoint installation look at it and say "Is that it? Where's X? Where's Y? Shouldn't we have Z somewhere? This is about half of what we wanted, and it's not even the most important half". If they ever work out what's happened, they keep their mouth shut because it would mean admitting they'd been clamouring with the company to set this product up while being almost entirely ignorant of what the product was.

Usually, there's one or two who know precisely what happened. They're not in a sufficiently senior role to do much about it, however.

I'm afraid to report that I have some really sad news.

At 7:35pm, March 17th, Alex lost conciousness and was taken to the emergency room with breathing complications. He was diagnosed with advanced-stage pnemonia and immediately placed on breathing tubes in the IC unit. Because of his low oxygen levels, he slipped into a coma. The doctors say they expect him to come out of it, but they don't know if it will be weeks or month. I'm sure he knows you all wish him a speedy recovery, and if theirs anyone who is interested in taking up the mantle in the meantime, send a writing sample and any past work to mailto:[email protected]. You can also send any well-wishes to his family, and I'll make sure there passed along.
