I love it. An ASCII representation of a smiley face. I'm sure there's no better way to do it :)
Oh, and the correct "tr" command is to use it in sed mode: banner X | tr -sd " "#X 01

No, that was the raw data. Only the business layer makes is display as "Frist".
Addendum (2011-07-18 16:49): Obviously, these arrays do bypass the business layer.

I wish people would stop quoting the entirety of this very long post. It's a bit annoying.

That's a WTF in itself; Investing time to post first.

sow rows = shape[1] and comlumns = shape[2] make a little bit of sense.
Might be worth restructuring all of them to see what shapes they are. Some of them are obvious, others not so much....

So they rolled their own xpm file format ?
At least you can see what the bitmaps are meant to look like..
Admin
None of these will do what is intended (unless I'm missing the fact that they are all intended to not modify the output of "banner FIRST").
The correct form for a global sed expression is 's/text to replace/replacement text/g'

Years ago I wrote an MS-DOS program to display the time - full-screen so I could see it from across the room without my glasses. It reached into the IBM BIOS to fetch the bitmaps of the characters '0'-'9' and ':'. Later I included my own bitmaps to give higher resolution; the source looks a lot like this post.
I've since switched to Linux and still run that program (ported to ncurses) because it's the only full-screen digital clock I have.
Hard-coded bitmaps can be useful.

Only if it's written in Haskell.

I love sed but its overkill for this
banner -c 1 FIRST | tr ' ' '0'
except its not as we are page three now

That's better. Sorry Just actually looked at the source of the page. Every single, individual, one and zero is in its own span tag rith RGB style attribute...

removed the -sd and the # and you have a winner

It was funny to read when it came out. It's even funny when clicking on the Random button on the site and seeing it. It's NOT funny when someone links to it from a one-sentence post and thinks they're so fucking clever to have discovered xkcd.
You probably still use lmgtfy and think you're so damn clever.
It means in real life, you're an unoriginal hipster doofus.
Got anything to do with sanitizing inputs to a SQL database, etc.? Link to Bobby Tables. Got a nerd-project slow-ass turing machine? Like a minecraft logic circuit from redstone? Link to the one where it's some guy alone in the world making a computer out of rocks. Got a story about password security or encryption? Link to the one where they beat the password out of the guy with a wrench.
Fuck off. You're not clever.

And in any case, you can't defame an anonymous avatar, because a defamatory statement must be "of and concerning" the plaintiff and must diminish the plaintiff's reputation in the community.
But most importantly for this case, truth is an absolute defense.

Yep. I still do this sort of thing for mouse cursors and stuff. The less external files, the easier it is to move the source code around.

Allow me to explain: sometimes women "douche" (or clean if you like) in their special place. The backwash (including all the nastiness, bacteria, etc. they were cleaning out) can sometimes go into a bag of sorts for later disposal. Now, by me calling him a "douche bag", I wasn't calling him a collection of feminine hygiene products, believe it or not. I was saying that he was worse (or equal to) a bag of fetid, bacteria ridden, vaginal washing by-product.
