There were plenty of birds in my class at school. That's a very sexist word though.

  • Haf (unregistered)

Why didn't he just rename them?

  • (cs)

Wow - if this is the way CS courses run there it is no surprise WTF code is so common!

  • (no name) (unregistered)

He should have named them "assignment1.exe" or "schoolwork1.exe" etc.

    CAPTCHA: Am I a genitus?

He should have renamed them Assignment1.exe, Assignment2.exe, and etc. That would have satisfied the Dean, because names are clearly everything.

Funny, those were the names of the games I stored on my schools network!

This is like Al Capone being brought in for tax evasion. Yeah, the things that he was busted for were not games, and yeah, the Dean didn't listen. But there was an eyewitness to the actual rule violation, for which there were no real consequences, and he got a C-- rather than an E for doing nothing at all in the class...insert your own <the real wtf> here.

Once again, the man who has already decided what is true meets a truth that disagrees with him.

And once again, the truth loses.

That said, it is beyond me why Andy didn't just delete the .exe files and keep the source in the network folder. Or is this one of those wacky places that grades only on the finished executables?

  • Eric (unregistered)

This story doesn't make any sense to me. Who has the time to go through folders and manually check file names? Why wouldn't you spend 2 minutes explaining the situation to someone else? How did you know you wouldn't get an F after you emptied your folder?

  • Alex (unregistered)

I don't know who is more foolish -- the Principal for being so ignorant of the curriculum of his classes; the teacher for giving Andy a C- and not asking where all his programs were; or Andy for just rolling over and accepting the punishment for an offense he didn't commit.

The story started off just like my senior year and ended so absurdly as to remove all likelihood of being true.

  • Steenbergh (unregistered)

If you suck up to the network admin, he actually lets you play Doom on his LAN. Worked in my high school anyway.

  • shotcircut (unregistered)

Or... here's a crazy idea. Create a password protected zip called, "C++ assignments" and give the password to the professor.

I'm sorry, but this is a little bogus.

Not sure when comments were required to whine about how the article can't possibly be true. None of the events in this article are unbelieveable; uncaring professors and ignorant deans are common occurences in academia. Swap "professors" with "bosses" and "deans" with "managers", and now it's a business model that's just as likely.

The reason we see so many whining comments is that people only post comments when they're motivated to do so. If you read the story and think "gosh, that's plausible, at least if we assume some liberties were taken with the dialogue. Sucks to be him", well, you're not going to post a comment about that. That's about the only sensible reaction to this story, so unless someone has something interesting to say that people can follow up on, this'll be a very boring comments page. And this post isn't helping with that at all. A more boring comment than this one is hard to imagine, isn't it? It's really got nothing to offer you, the reader, except the faint hope that I might pull out of this with something clever, but this time I'm going to surprise you: I'm not going to. This contribution to the tedium of the comments page will, I hope, help us all to give up on the comments for today and get back to work. You can do your part by continuing to add your own reasons why this post isn't sufficiently funny or plausible or horrifying or implausible or non-tech-related to qualify as a "real WTF".

Sounds like a buddy of mine in high school. Chemistry/Bio Computer lab had no BIOS passwords, so he set them to boot off of the B:\ drive (which didn't exist) and then passlocked the BIOS.

School admins INSISTED on paying for "Professional Repair" to have the BIOS reset, then (for some reason) the OS reinstalled. This way they could bone my budyy over the costs and time lost, instead of simply asking him for the BIOS password.

But really, what kind of a student would just give up that easy (especially when it means going from an A to a C). Surely it would have been easier to get his teacher to step up for him and explain that those programs were all assignments... Easier still would be to just rename the files.

Not very believable. Two things everyone should get out of college/university:

    • getting lots of contacts for later on
    • understanding that EVERY decision can be appealed

The learning stuff is okay, but most of it is useless, forgotten quickly, and out of date.

I think it's at the point where a 4th year college senior doesn't have the ability to do any of the obvious. Most of which have been reduxed numerous times above.

    1. Rename said executables.
    2. Encrypt and password protect assignments folder - for added fun, put some dummy files in the root folder and rename actual folder to .assignments (assuming linux)
    3. Hand in said Zip disk before when all assignments are complete / when professor expects them.
    4. As uncaring as the professor is, in 6 years at 2 different colleges I did not have one who didn't care so much that they wouldn't accept a late assignment with reasonable excuse and proof that the assignments were finished long before the due date.

maybe I'm just too used to people refusing to hear what is being said (or bothered with reality), but yeah I really doubt I would have let that go, at the very least I would have spoken to the prof. and given him the zip disk; even though they used to cost what $25

    Writing is the real WTF:

WAC 434-610-025 No agency filings affecting this section since 2003 "Writing" defined.

"Writing" means handwriting, typewriting, printing, photostatting, photographing, and every other means of recording any form of communication or representation, including letters, words, pictures, sounds, symbols, or combinations thereof, and all papers, maps, magnetic tape, punched cards, discs, drums, and other documents.

I remember in highschool, we had a technology class. In this class there was a flight simulator game, Sim City game, and the Incredible Machine game.

I put them all on my Network drive. The next day I was called in to the office and basically told. "You won't get in trouble, but you're not allowed to have those there, go delete them now"

And that was the end of my WTF story.
