Has to be pointed out that if the girl in question is 16, then (as Leighton is not technically in a position of authority over her) any relationship they do have is not actually technically illegal.

Can't see either parents or teachers quite seeing it that way, though.

Wonder where this story came from? Could easily be Britain.

I remember the days before background checks. as a first-year university undergraduate I did some volunteer work in the local "special school" teaching slow learners to read. No checks made there. Not even any such questions at the interview.

I could go on about some of the stuff that went on between the guys in the 17-18 age group in our school and (at least) one of our female teachers, but this seems to have turned into a family site in the last few months so I won't.

That was a risky move by Dave. He was probably banking on the hope that the Headteacher was a skirt-chasing rascal himself.

Only if you define being attracted to someone only a few years younger than yourself (and able to choose her own sex life) as perverted. Acting on that attraction would be problem if he had some sort of authority over her, but only then.

The correct answer is to give them the answer they want, and then get the girl's phone number to hook up with her later, outside of school grounds.

I am the Leighton mentioned in the story. I was quite shocked to see the creative licence used when the story was added to the site but hey hum.

Just a few pointers/answers. This event happened in a High School in the North of England. I had just finished my second year of sixth form education and was starting my college course and apprenticeship. The pupils were no older than 16 years old at any time during my employment there.

I always get kind of depressed when I see these inevitable comments from submitters. How much of the story that ended up on the site is actually true?

    Important rules of job interviews:

    A. Repeat to yourself: "It's not in the bag."

    B. To answer the question, "What would you do?" think of the correct answer to "What should I do?" and give that as your response.

    C. Laugh at their jokes, but don't offer your own.

Dave was obviously failing on the first point here, which led to his failure on the second and third.

  • Leighton (unregistered)

The story isn't that far from the truth in all honesty.

Dave did arrive in Jeans and T-Shirt and almost late The Headteacher was Male The interview panel consisted of the Headteacher, the Head of IT, my Boss and a Governer The first part of the interview was the question part. I have no idea about Dave's qualifications I was not just relying on my qualifications as I had around 5 years of PC knowledge by then. The second part of the interview was the technical part and this is where I knew I had got the job as Dave was unable to identify the difference between the CPU and Memory (I KID YOU NOT!!!) I was offered the job on the spot.

As I read the story, neither the age of the girl nor the legal jurisdiction is mentioned.

I don't see how you conclude that the girl is 16, or that 16 is above the age of consent where this took place.

I don't think the editor changed the fact. The story tells that Dave were confident and oozed confidence. What we learn when Leighton is getting quizzed at technicalities, which Dave had told were tough ones, we, or at least I, connected dots and ended up with Dave being an incompetent jerk. The rest is just icing on that cake.

Edit: Regarding a 16 year old being technically legal prey for a computer tech: No such thing. Neither you or the girl will have to ponder whether this is OK or not. AFAIK, even a fling between a student and the Schools janitors apprentice is off limits.

Your reading comprehension skills are rubbish, pal. There was no specific age of anyone mentioned in the story. The fact that it is legal to have a sexual relationship with a 16yo girl was raised as a legal technicality during the course of the comment threads.

It's been suggested that: a) If you work at a school in any capacity then a relationship between a 16yo (or older) and yourself is illegal. b) On the other hand, if you're not in a position of authority then nobody has any legal cause for complaint. c) Its been stated that this happened in the North of England, where the age of consent is indeed 16. The story has a feel of "British-ness" about it, which is where the assumption arises. d) TRWTF is so-called "civilized" Western nations whose age of consent is higher than 16 (are there any?)

Its a conflict of interest for students and any staff member to be seeing each other. Furthermore Janitors are some of the most powerful people in the school. Not in the political runnings mind you. Who else is trusted with access to every single room in the whole building above all others? The guy with the key to every single room. There is power in privileged access.

The appropriate way to go about it is wait until the student graduates then take that agonizing tension filled romance to the next level... Like my friends parents. His dad was a band director. His mom was a band member. They were friendly while she was still in school and as soon as she graduated she was no longer off limits.

Its a shame how much of the story was changed, but at least this wasn't another hanzo story.

Captcha: Plaga - Same captcha two posts in a row? How often does that happen.

'MURICA of course. In most places it's 18, except in some cases where it's like 16 if one party isn't over 24.

As a general rule though even if not illegal, it's likely to get you fired, although not arrested for "statutory rape" (the real WTF).

As a person being interviewed, don't get too comfortable with the interviewer(s). Even if things get into a relaxed state, always be on guard, (especially if there are more than one interviewer in the room). Showing up in jeans would usually mean a quick exit from the interview, even if the working atmosphere was a very relaxed environment.

I credit you with nothing of the sort if you actually think it would be appropriate to nail a student at the school you are working at. It doesn't have to be illegal. It's still inappropriate and clear grounds for dismissal.

Somewhat O/T, but am I the only one who would rather be interviewed than be the interviewer.

Interviews are easy, you just talk about yourself. Interviewing is hard, you have to pretend to give a shit about the person you are interviewing.

While technically there's nothing wrong with that it can get complicated. A friend of mine started teaching at a high school in his early 20's, got along well with one particular student and tongues started wagging around the school. Nothing ever actually happened. The summer after she graduated they ran into each other at an event and soon after started dating. The perception among others was that something had to have been going on because they started dating so soon after she graduated. He had to transfer to another school because the rumours were destroying his credibility where he was teaching (with both staff and students). He never did anything wrong, but the perception of others almost destroyed his career.

To the OP - if you want the stories written to your spec then you start your own site and gather submissions and post boring stories for people to read. This site takes dramatic license to make the stories more engaging and doesn't purport to be a documentary.
