"This customer was satisfied exactly as often as he was not right – never."

So... He was never not right, which would mean he was always right?

    Double negations are your enemy.

Having just sat through a automated telephone system getting more and more sarcastic about the fact that "Your 5 digit ZIP code still does not match the one on our records" (probably something to do with the fact that I don't live in the US and don't have such thing as a 5 digit ZIP code), I'm not sure that it's safe to assume that repeatedly submitting an invalid request is always user error.

Oh, and if you're wondering why I kept submitting, I was hoping that it would give up eventually and let me talk to an agent - no such luck.

Humpph. If a web site talked to me like this, I'd keep hitting Check Out to see just how far the messages would go. Then I'd modify the URL to say "checkout=Y" and get my damn discount anyway.
Just like clicking fast on the grunts to hear the stupid things they would say.

An even more common mistake is to reject postcodes that have letters and spaces.

This is kind of hack will nearly always come back to bite you one day. The checkout system will have a bug and you'll start calling your beloved customers "ninny" and "retarded". The next minute, you're called to the boss' office.
