Discourse now only allows you to post text in the form of DF screenshots.

As a lurker, I appreciate having a non-Discourse solution for reading the comments, but I'm guessing having to click through twice to actually post something will annoy people.

Wouldn't a simpler solution just be to get rid of Discourse?

This is something that has been mentioned before, but ultimately I suspect it will encourage signups rather than discouraging them in practice... primarily because many of the more active/vocal people are already here.

So we're going to boost forum signups by obscuring how awful the forum software is until the user has already committed?

    This seems...uhh...evil.

  • (disco) in reply to dookdook

And now you understand modern development.

  • (disco) in reply to dookdook

I don't know. I'm just speculating that this is how it might turn out based on how some people already make the leap from front-page commentator to WTDWTF contributor when Discourse was used for some of the articles already.

  • (disco)

@mark_bowytz, your photo is broken: [image]

  • (disco)

Wait, do we not have a search? I'm confused.

  • (disco)

and now the old sits is gone and broken, as is my interest in reading to the sidebar any. this sucks.

  • (disco) in reply to aliceif

There is a search, it's just commented out and not working. But, it'll come back soon - https://github.com/tdwtf/WtfWebApp/issues/56

Throughout my years I've learned not to trust the "soon" promise.

  • (disco) in reply to Zacrath

Is that like the 'two weeks' promise?

Yeah, or the "You'll get a raise when our product takes off" promise.

Just musing: If your product is bacon, that would be equivalent to “when pigs fly”.

I also especially enjoy that classic discussions are now a little spiced up with html tags, as for example http://thedailywtf.com/articles/comments/The_Brillant_Paula_Bean

There's something about this new look that is making my brain scream 'Where the hell is all the contrast???'

Probably the verylightgrey background. Not sure.

  • (disco)

I appreciate we moved into this decade by adding a hamburger menu

  • (disco)

I LOVED the 2003ish vibe. Also the new look requires twice as much scrolling instead of just reading the whole article at a glance.

  • (disco) in reply to marczellm

ditto! Right now I've set the home page to 80% text size. Once I manage to overcome my laziness I might write some CSS for that.

  • (disco) in reply to Luhmann

Haha! That's a nice way to put it.

BTW, I like the new site and signing into DC is easier with social accounts.

  • (disco)

How do I show full articles like before so that I don't have to click on the article to read it? My clicks are a valuable commodity and I'd rather not waste them.

  • (disco)

Looks great, just the articles need links on top to the next and previous ones. Like the ones at the bottom... if I've read a long article previously it's a chore to scroll down all the way just to be able to move to the next one. Also arrow keys for navigation would be pretty 2014. Otherwise seems awesome as I'm here just for the articles and not sidebars or whatever some of the others are complaining are now broken

  • (disco)

The only I see (so far) is that the side panel should be on the right of the stories. That way you don't get a web page on the right hand side of the of the screen when you scroll down a bit

    .

  • (disco)

There's a few tweaks necessary still, but all and all, even though it doesn't happen often on the internet, and surely not amongst those conservative ("if it ain't broke don't fix it") programmers and system engineers, but I'm actually fine with the new lay-out.

  • (disco) in reply to aliceif

I was born that way. IT'S A MEDICAL CONDITION!!!

  • (disco)

I really liked the "random article" - function on the previous design. Any chance it could be added? I can't find it anywhere..

  • (disco) in reply to lindskogaren

It's there on the sidebar on the left, but unfortunately the sidebar disappears when viewing an article.

  • (disco)

The comments preview is atrocious. I couldn't really read any of it, it needs a formatting overhaul. There's no real separation between each comment.

  • (disco)

And another webpage which generously uses 50% of the screen. HELLO? I want to read and not scroll permanently!

  • (disco) in reply to Saddev

They obviously made it so small to show off their infiniscroll and floating nag-bar implementation.

  • (disco) in reply to Saddev
    Saddev:

    Phoneworms.

  • (disco)

As I mentioned back in March, it's been almost seven years since the look and feel of The Daily WTF has been updated, and I was getting pretty tired of the "2003ish" vibe the site had.

So, 2014-7= 2007. So the old site was dated when it was first completed?

  • (disco)

Works pretty snappy on my minimalistic tablet, though, as already mentioned, having to scroll twice through the same comments page to actually be able to post a comment it's trwtf

  • (disco)

The "Random Article" link (thanks for showing it to me by the way!) keeps sending me to the same article. After waiting a while (~hours?), it sends me to another article, but pressing back and then random again sends me to the same article. I am using Safari 7.1, same behavior on my iPad with iOS 7. Some sort of cache/redicrection problems I guess?

  • (disco)

    Either:

    a) Don't put a "Continue this discussion on Discourse »" on top; or

    b) (preferably) Don't jump to the end of the thread on Discourse.

I had to scroll all the way up on Discourse because I had read other people's comments yet.

  • (disco)

I wasn't a fan of Discourse opening on another tab, either. There's no point in leaving behind a tab which is repeating the comments.

If I wanted that to open a new tab I could have done so myself. It's not like your target readers are browser-illiterates.

Okay, I realize this is (sort of) a solution to my problem of not having read the comments before jumping to Discourse. But it's the wrong way around it.

This came up sounding more aggressive than I'd like. I'm just trying to give constructive criticism.
  • (disco)

The header does some weird stuff when you scroll up at the top of the page on mobile. The logo kinda pops in and out of existence.

The page also expands way out past the right side of my device's viewport.

What he said. Jump to the comment following the one I just read, or don't bother jumping.

Yes. Me too. My caps lock key was stuck.
