    I often ask people "which one?" when they refer to America.

    Which is extra funny because "Wales" is from an Old English word meaning "foreigners". The funny continues because the Welsh were natives to Britain and the Anglo-Saxons were invaders, yet the Welsh got called foreigners. Actually, they also migrated at some point from mainland Europe in pre-Roman times. Basically, we're all assholes.

    In fact, 鬼佬 literally means "ghost/devil-man". The term has basically lost all its rudeness; its continued use is perhaps because alternatives such as 外國人 (foreigner), 西方人 (westerner) or 美國人 (American) seem unnecessarily formal and precise for colloquial speech, and we haven't invented a better term yet. Where I come from, you don't expect people to distinguish between a French and a German, so people just refer to all white foreigners by one antiquated umbrella term.

    Hm... This rationale is similar to that used by Americans during and after the civil war. We don't think it's rude any more, so it's not demeaning. You, sir, are a racist.

    I don't know if it is just where I am from, but we pronounce this in cantonese (I am from Malaysia, where everyone speakes at least 5 languages)
