but any sane design that features a lot of white in the background, a lot of black type in the foreground, and a few decorative splashes of colour is fine.

Please, stop with the white backgrounds already. They hurt the eyes! At the very least, tone it down; 80-90% white is a significant improvement.

I want the old look, I think someone mentioned like an option in your account settings. That wouldn't be bad, some of us like our soft pastels.

I really don't care about the menu on the left or right, or the shape of the corner. But PLEASE change the green the color it's ugly. :)

if you're like me and can't match your sock with your shoes, why don't you google "color scheme" and try something like this tool: http://www.wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html (not affiliated, just found them on google)

  • Jimmy (unregistered)

I don't know about the dark blue on lime crime.

  • monday (unregistered)

    This design is Brillant

  • (cs)

    No, sorry, don't like it.

I don't care for the kind of corners or lift/right navigation, but the colours are far to vivid. (At least for me to read TDWTF at work).

And I'm far too lazy to remember, if 'CodeSOD' is red, lime, black or what-else . Please add a short note, waht category the entry s about.

  • (cs)

Firstly, the color scheme could work if the yellow and blue components weren't right next to oder on top of each other. The "SUBMIT YOUR WTF" button is an example. Avoid sticking (near-)complementary colors except white and black nxt to each other; that just generates eye-strain.

Secondly, there's an error in the new comment template: A space is missing in the headline between "Comment On" and the story name. For example, the headline for this story reads "Comment OnAnnouncement: Yet Another New Look".

Oh, and add one to the "preferred the nav bar on the right" count.

Wtf, navigation on the left? No! Bad Alex! I liked the old look better, but this is fine too. Just MOVE THE FRACKING NAVIGATION BARS!!

    Oh, and captcha "transverbero"? Wtf?

Why does a button named "Page Down" move the page up? :-s

  • (cs)

I like the hard diagonal cuts on the corners, that's something I've never seen anywhere else. The green really clashes with the other colors, though.

  • Anon (unregistered)

Wow... I didn't even notice that there was a content menu in the old look. Perhaps because it was on the right-hand side and I normally expect to see such a thing on the left, so my brain just glossed right over it.

    Odd.

Eww. Sorry to have to say it, but that green just looks really really ugly against blue and red. I think I like all of the old looks better.

I think this new look is just a slap in the face to old users who are used to the old style of the site. You should change it back or face the Spanish inquisition.

OK, that makes a lot of sense. Maybe "parchment?" Or, if I were to be unkind, "lily-livered?"

Actually, Chemisor is correct. Nobody, other than deluded Okies, paints their walls in a pure white. Toning it down is much easier on the eyeballs. So why not do that for the world's most important web-site?

Can I just vote a reddit-reddit-reddit double-plus-really-good on the puke green? Sitewise, it has karma, man.

Like, say, using a computer keyboard without noticing that the caps lock is on?

  • (cs)

The colors are a bit too strong to my taste, but I'll get used to it. The green color does not suit the style, as others have mentioned. The blue and red are quite ok.

I preferred the navigation bar on the right side of the screen - actually it's not even a navigation bar, but more like ad banners and extra links, so it fits much better to the right side. (If it were a traditional navigation bar, then it would be reasonable to have it on the left side, because of the control relationships: left-to-right and top-to-bottom is the typical order of control.)

But anyways, the real WTF is the Community Server (or at least the forum/comment software a couple of years ago, if some still remember it).

  • (cs)

Everytime I look at the version 4.0 picture I cry a little because I know that I have to deal with this version. Seriously I REALLY like the old one better, either change it back, or give the option or something.

Probably not much to say that hasn't been said already. I tip my hat to you.

    So now TRWTF is TDWTF?

  • RA (unregistered)

The green makes my eyes hurt and I'm not even exaggerating... Please make an option to do something about the green, I don't think it's healthy to look at this color combo.

v0.1: Really Old School. I think there were only 3 readers back then.

Yet another instance of crappy translation software. That should have read:

"I think the readers were only 3 back then."

  • (cs)

New look is fine... but what you really need is Katja to come back. I bet she made you $100,000.

  • (cs)

Can't say I care much for the new colour scheme (Seems way to "out of the 80's neon wannabe"), but it ain't my site so I have no say anyways :)

  • My Name (unregistered)

Really, I don't mind the new color scheme so much, but it clashes horribly with the old logo. You'll need to do some tweaking before it stops looking like two 'lite' themes thrown together.

  • TM (unregistered)

I like it :) What's with the article titles that have different color?

  • (cs)

Could you move the sidebar back to the right? Seriously, most people have their bookmarks on the left and the sidebar unpleasantly offsets the content to right edge... Other than that, thumbs up.

  • (cs)

Alex, why are you constantly changing the look of the webside with its content continually beeing more and more diluted and losing significance and educational and entertainment value.

Making a website new and shiny does not help it's content being more interesting. This change now is the straw that broke the camel's back and I'm deleting your Website from my daily visited bookmarks.

Thank you (and your co-editors) for a few informative years and goodbye!

  • Mii (unregistered)

Too many colors if you ask me..

Maybe remove the dark blue and replace it with the light blue from the text?

  • Patrick (unregistered)

Wow... Those colors are... Somewhat bright. Especially first thing on a Monday morning.

  • (cs)

Have a heart! I normally scan TDWTF first thing in the morning over my coffee and toast and your puke green scheme really is way too loud for that time of day. I need pastel to ease me into the morning, please.

  • Sander Marechal (unregistered)

Wow. I've been reading this site for nigh on two years and I've never felt the need to comment. Until now.

The new site looks is horrible. The color scheme is awful (especially the green) and the left-side menu is very annoying. It all looks so 1990-ish. I really like the previous look. It was much, much easier on the eyes. I'm going to need sunglasses if I'm going to read this. And a greasemonkey script to turn the site into something half-way readable.

Programmers aren't designers. After so many years of TDWTF you should know better.

  • Lech (unregistered)

    Worst. Change. Ever.

  • (cs)

I vote to restore "v0.1: Really Old School" It's the best looking on them all....

  • Lech (unregistered) in reply to Lech

And the side bar - on the right side it was better.

  • Agos (unregistered)

Things come out of the header if you resize the window under 860 px. Really not nice. Also, colours are awful. (tested with safari 3, firefox 3 on Mac OS 10.5)

  • Agos (unregistered)

    ...I was forgetting:

    • Lots and lots of error in the XHTML markup
    • Lots and lots of tables lying around
    • 4 different look for the elements of the navigation column alone (which, as noted before, is in the wrong place)

    The solution? RSS.

  • coz (unregistered)

    don't use flash

  • (cs)

I don't know why so many people are bitching about the menu being on the left-side. According to good web design principles (Anyone heard of those? Doubt it) navigation menus are supposed to be either across the top or on the left-hand side. Personally, the only thing I don't like is the weird cut-off corners. IMO rounded corners look better. I'm also not a fan of the "pea soup Exorcist vomit" green color. The red and the blue are fine, but while the green is complimentary to the red, it's out of place.

Other than that, I like the new design. But it needs more JavaScript. And XML. And AJAX. :-)

  • Anonymous Luser (unregistered) in reply to coz

    Agreed.

I would prefer navigation links on right.

    The lime green is horrible.

A "wood effect" background instead of the grey/gray would be fun, or at least a nice woody brown.

The white backgrounds are rather too bright.

I'm a developer and I believe that most people who visit this site are as well. I think many developers would favor a simple yet tasteful design. Personally, I think this design is on the edge of both those traits. Maybe it is just me but those colors are not all that pleasing. You should do what I do and run the color scheme by your girlfriend/wife/random_female ahead of time. I often do this and many times it has saved me some embarrassment when I try to leave for work with pants that don't match my shirt.

    My opinion exactly.

Simple design FTW, but whatever you do, choose colours that don't make your visitors want to claw out their eyeballs. PLEASE.

    These new ones are horrible.

  • AM (unregistered)

The new format forces me to scroll down and then to the right and then back up to read some of the posts. Not a very user friendly experience. Scrolling down wouldn't bother me so much but having to scroll right to finish reading a line is a bit much. By the way I am looking at this on a wide screen laptop with a 1280 X 768 resolution.
