Just another Manic Monday. Wish it was Sunday.

    Comment held for moderation.

  • Prime Mover (unregistered)

TRWTF is that those comments in the posting dated 2022-11-10 are still held for moderation, even when this state of affairs has been highlighted on its own error'd page.

    Not sure if this is post-modern post-truth post-ironic post-commenting or what ...

  • AnotherNonSignedIn (unregistered) in reply to Prime Mover

Well that, and the fact that the comments reported today were in reply to a comment, by mag, that is clearly spam and hasn't been moderated.

I think there's a possibility that the train screenshot shows a formatting error, not a maths error. It looks to me like someone thought it would be cool to make an ASCII art arrow (--------->) and then replace the middle bit with text about the fullness of the train. But, they didn't make it long enough, so you just get one of the hyphens in front of the number, looking like a negative sign.

I feel that something is missing in Argle Bargle's contribution.

Not to mention that neither "under" nor "over" is an adjective...

Looks like the US finally took over Canada, too.

    Lousy Monsday weather!

Apparently like Arthur Dent, Android can't get the hang of Tuesdays.

Not only have the US's states and Switzerland's cantons merged together, but they also brought Canada's provinces along with them too.

As a person who normally uses the Celsius temperature scale, it took me a while to realize these were not summer temperatures. But when considered in Fahrenheit, a chance of snow at just below freezing makes sense. So I don't really see the WTF.

There are two mondays and no tuesday.

You mean like the actual moderation message?

I also think the spam comment should have been included in the DailyWTF moderation post.

Look, I don't even know the logic for why some comments get held for moderation or not. Links DEFINITELY do. Short comments frequently do. Long comments sometimes do, for reasons that are inscrutable. I suppose I should go read the code, but I'm waiting for someone else to do it, honestly.

The last one has me wondering why they want you to pay pesetas to travel to Okajima, Japan.

  • WTFGuy (unregistered)

I travel a lot and so post from a variety of IP addresses. It seems that after enough posts from one address the site decides I'm harmless & my posts are (mostly) not held for moderation. But from a novel IP address, any post long or short seems to be held.

And yes, shorter seems to be more prone to being held, familiar IP address or no.

  • WTFGuy (unregistered)

The Coast Starlight of which I am familiar runs along the US Pacific coast. Seattle to Okajima paid for in pesetas would be a verry interesting train ride. Doubtless we'd find Peter Lorre in a white linen suit holding court in the parlor car over a martini.

  • WTFGuy (unregistered)

Hmm. Two comments of similar length posted <5 minutes apart from the same device at the same IP address. The first held for moderation, but not the second. Who knows about this third one? We shall see.

The occupancy percentage for train carriages is usually calculated from the weight of the carriage as measured by sensors in the suspension system. "-12%" probably means a faulty or miscalibrated sensor reading less than the "empty" weight of the carriage.

Of course the software really should be smart enough to see a negative value and replace it with "Unknown" or something though.

Are we filling that train with anti-people?

Maintain social distancing and don't touch anybody… to quote the late Stephen Hawking: "If you meet you anti-matter twin, do not touch or shake hands. If you do you will both disappear in a bright flash of light!"

The screenshot shows one of my comments that is awaiting moderation and that mentions a comment of mine that has been awaiting moderation since august.

Luckily my post was full of typos, so it didn't get hold for moderation as well :-)

Even though web forums are barely being used anymore, all such discourse having moved to one billionaire's application or the other one's, thedailywtf.com does still have one. It appears that comments here which are made by users of the web forum are much less likely to be held for moderation. If you would like to give that a try, the link to register for the forums is here: https://what.thedailywtf.com/register

My comment's been held for moderation, and so has my wife's!

TRWTF is I clicked the above link to Log In, and had to navigate back here myself, where I had to refresh the page to get it to recognise that I was signed in.

Maybe those billionaires are billionaires because their forum software works a lot better than anything anyone else can cobble together?

No idea why this comment came through twice... Urgh. The first comment was not held for moderation, so it tried again. And failed.

Addendum 2022-11-21 05:27: Why does the layout here still makes no sense, after all these years...

  • TS (unregistered)

In my experience, a good way to avoid having your comment held for moderation is to post something clearly wrong that makes you look stupid and that you regret after a few minutes' thought.

  • (nodebb) in reply to Remy Porter

I suppose I should go read the code, but I'm waiting for someone else to do it, honestly.

It would be a valuable public service. If we can't improve this forum software, we should at least document it. There are three key pieces of information that would be useful:

    1. How to avoid moderation

    2. How to format comments

    3. The fact that you can't edit your comments, just append to them

  • (nodebb) in reply to jkshapiro

    Upvote.

Oh wait, that is impossible as well.

  • Conradus (unregistered) in reply to jkshapiro

    "How to avoid moderation"

Most forum filtering software setups are allergic to spelling out how to avoid moderation, as it gives spammers a roadmap to avoiding moderation as well.
