yurghl! How do I put back the 'decent' colors? This is just plain awful. I'm actually considering NOT reading articles in a stomach-turned codescheme.

Anybody know of a browser which lets you change colors on the fly for sites...?

  • lemortede (unregistered)

It feels like there is a fiesta in my eyes and every one who was invited got drunk and threw up. (I don't like the new colors or format if you cant tell)

hehe, my captcha phrase is letatio

The 70s are calling - they'd like their colour scheme back.

It must truly be 1998 again, because even the iframes in some of the articles ("the onclick does what?") are freaking me out. Were those always there or is that part of the new layout? What's the point?

  • AM (unregistered) in reply to AM

Seems to be with the "OnClick Does What" Posted on 1/21 and not all the postings.

YOU BROKE MY SIDEBAR! PLZ FIX TEH SIDEBAR NOW!!!!

That ad below the banner makes it look like a cheap phpBB forum, though.

What ad? Oh, that's right, I run AdBlock Plus. :-)

  • (cs)

Not that you will care, but IE6, WinXP SP2. Because of the extra wide line in the new article 'OnClick Does What?!' The side bar is pushed to the bottom. It'll need a 'width: n%' in the CSS on the main column.

I imagine it probably would have done the same thing on the old site.

Otherwise, I quite like the new design, garish but suits the idea of the site well.

  • (cs)

Whatever you do, just don't change the logo. That little guy with the stupefied expression epitomizes our reactions to most of these WTFs.

I see a lot of dissatisfaction with the new design. Why not have a contest to skin TDWTF? I see a lot of different categories. Most Retro, Most Usable, Most Unusable, Most like the NextStep desktop, Best use of Puke Green, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Actually, I just tried it in IE6, and the favorites button is not there for IE6.

What this site really needs is a wooden table in the background again! Wooden tables, FTW!! Who's with me on this one? Hello? Guys?!

Fine, I'm going back to slashdot for the remainder of the day!

  • Josh (unregistered)

I like the colors but have the following suggestions:

    1. change the green. As others have pointed out is kind of retro-pea-soup. If you like green, then make it a more royal green.

    2. Remove the green under the colored headers. They draw attention to non-important information and are overpowering. (they draw more attention than the header itself!) I would think a light grey in those cases would be fine.

    3. Put the missing corners back in or make them curved. In general it looks weird (90's style) and your site doesn't follow the same theme in other places (there is no style to tie it all together).

In closing - I like the new colors, they do add energy, but some small tweaks may be needed.

  • (cs)

Looks alright to me, but really wide forum posts are no longer allowed to scroll horizontally; they simply get truncated at the right edge (in Firefox anyway).

    http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/7714/143685.aspx

It's probably a "div {overflow: hidden}" in the CSS, rather than "div {overflow: scroll}" or something.

    Don't quit your day job.

You should probably stick to writing code, and compiling WTF entries and leave web design to the professionals.

  • el jaybird (unregistered)

I really don't like the sidebar on the left. Put it back on the right, and the new look will be perfect.

  • (cs)

Thinking of the old designs, what's the difference between 3.0 and 4.0? (Besides the extra navigation links of 4.0.)

  • Jason (unregistered)

Ouch. It hurts. How does this site continue to find ways to make itself less usable???

For several generations now, you've somehow disabled the arrow keys and page-up/page-down in IE7. Now you've introduced little scrolling DIVs to hold comments and stories, each one of which must be painstakingly scrolled back and forth to read the content (and the side-side scrollbar is way down off the bottom of the screen.)

Please please please throw out all this crap and start over from scratch. Use HTML. Even if you think you understand CSS layouts, please take my word for it. You don't. You've gotten it wrong for 2 years now.

    Daily WTF, WTF thyself.

  • (cs)

I like it -- even the primary colors. I don't care for the red much as it seems "angry" to me, but that's the way red has always been for me.

I would prefer to have the sidebar on the right, though. It's hard to read down the page with the sidebar breaking up the reading flow.

  • (cs) in reply to CJ

The snot green really doesn't go with the blue. The dark cyan text on it is very hard to read (not enough contrast) and using 8pt italic type there is just cruel to those of us in trifocals.

Waddiathink, I typed those BBCode tags around your text manually? The quote button is there in Firefox and IE7. Can't test for IE6 since it is ancient history on this box.

Holy shit! Seriously, what the hell is wrong with the guys choosing this design? It looks ridiculous. And no, there actually was no need at all for a new look. The old look was perfectly fine. It feels like I'm on some "lol funny internet fun" page for kids now.

  • R (unregistered)

Everyone seems to hate this, but I really quite like this actually. Especially the green.

It's incredible how uptight some people get about a page's redesign. Everyone will have forgotten what the old one looked like within a fortnight.

My first thought was that I accidentally went to Slashdot, but then the green / yellow lines really blew me out. I like the pasteliciousness much better.

I'm not sure if it's alraedy mentioned (way too many comments), but the grey background is excellent to be replaced by a nice wooden texture, giving us the illusion that there is a real wooden table at our screens.

Based on your screen shots, I assume you use Adblock or Noscript from v2.01 on. (Okay, maybe not for the 0.1 version.) You don't want to look at your own ads? To borrow your phrase, WTF?

Note from Alex: I don't block ads. I used Archive.org for the screenshots, which didn't bring back the old ads, so I removed the broken images via Firebug and took a screenshot. v4.0 seemed out of place, so I pulled it out of that shot, too.

My eyes are burning! Make it stop!!

Seriously though - I like the idea of the new look, but you have a bunch of colors that look like 2 were picked out, then another 2, but not all at once.

Multiple colors are fine, but at least go with a palette of complimentary colors.

  • Rob (unregistered)

Oh my god I hate the new look. wtf was wrong with the old one?

I don't know what you people are talking about, with the menu being on the left side... the menu is the same place it's always been!

Cough cough "Complementary colours." Although "Colors" is fine, I'm afraid it's unacceptable to suggest that Alex sends you some colors for free.

Unrelatedly: the next time I see anybody confuse "effect" with "affect," I am going to get seriously green and hulkish.

    Yes indeedie.

I've noticed an awful lot of professionals offering to help on this one (as opposed to just offering to bitch).

Presumably, "Not quitting your day job" for a Professional Web Designer (with side-bar) means "Pay me or I'll thcweam and thcweam til I'm blue in the face." Who are you people, anyway? W3C Nazis (forfeiting argument for the sake of gratuitous insult), or just tiny-minded introverts?

And personally I still prefer puke-green.

Honesty, I thought I had stumbled on ebay when I got there. The green and yellow hues...

I.. I'm not sure I like it, but I'm not sure I dislike it either.

    It's a bit like cloverfield, I guess.

I gotta say it looks neat. Some gradients here and there always do the trick of beefing things up :)

  • K.D. (unregistered)

I think the page looks great, excluding the first inch and a half. The new colors are great, the bring the page to life, which also causes the header to get lost. It's lacking "life" as compared to the rest of the page now.

  • Cesa (unregistered)

Ok, I give up. The green is disgusting and need to go. I followed the advice to install Stylish, but there is no style that changes the color. I tried to make one on my own, but the last time I did anything to do with the web was back in '97 when frames was the hot thing...so well, I haven't managed to change a thing ;)

Does anyone have a style that makes the green go far, far away? If so, please upload it to the stylish server! :)

  • (cs)

The left-hand menu will take some getting used to, but I like the colours.

  • Maks Verver (unregistered)

I like the colour scheme, and I think the new lay-out would be OK if you hadn't tried to cram in ugly advertisements in every possible (and impossible) location. I much prefer the simple compactness of version 1.0 (and your weblog) to this mess.

On my screen you don't have any content whatsoever in the top 400 (!) pixels of the screen (or over 300 pixels in the webpage area). That's a ridiculous amount of wasted space at the top of the page.

The same goes for the square ad beneath the main article summary. It's only 300 pixels in width, but it wastes much more space because no text flows around it. My monitor has a resolution of 1680x1050 pixels, yet when I open the front page in a maximized window, the only content I can see is two paragraphs of introductionary text (not even an entire article) and two titles. Note that in this mode the ad beneath the main article takes up more space than the article title and introduction!

So in short: nice colour scheme, really bad lay-out. I wish there were more web developers who would value the quality of their website above their ad revenue income. I know maintaining this website costs money too, but I'm still disappointed.

I want to see the same number of comments as words in the article. no one else post anything, okay?

Of course the kiss-ass comment gets a "featured" tag.
