I for one, do not care what the site is called. I don't understand why so many people are getting worked up about it either, do you come to this website just to stare at the url and write stupid comments?

  • Sjon (unregistered)

I think the new name sucks :) I don't see the problem with mentioning the F-word that people seem to have.

  • el (unregistered)

If your grandmay didn't know about "fuck" you wouldn't be here. Bad excuse.

  • VogonnConstructionFleet (unregistered)

Hate the new name. Liked the old name because it gave it a gritty, no-holds-barred feel. Now I feel like I'm sucking up to click-through advertisers.

I'm really quite bored by the whole PC-stuff (and I'm not talking about Personal Computers...) did any of the "correct" phrases ("xyz challenged" etc.) change anything in the way people think about things? or are these phrases just covering up narrow-minded and chauvinist thinking which does not change the least by using new labelling?

I'm quite convinced that it is the latter - so there's really no sense in giving in to PCness.

I'm disappointed. the new name is sort of "lamely correct"...

thankfully, this whole PCness did not catch on so heavy here in europe. might be it was not as necessary in the first place ;o)

captcha: kungfu - yeah, let's shatter PCness! ;o)

This is a real shame. Everyone at my work knows this site, as do many of my friends, and theres no way they would if it was always called something as uninteresting as this. Who is going to say "hey, did you see that worse than failure article the other day?"... no-one. The memorable ring of the name has gone and so there goes all the geeky enthusiasm for the site. You cant totally screw with the identifying label of a place to visit and not expect people to turn off.

  • Jon (unregistered)

Congrats on the unveiling of your new site name.

Remember kids, 'Failure' is a very bad word.

I think Richard Pryor said it best: "Fuck censorship, and its moma.."

  • Last post from Le_Forgeron here (unregistered) in reply to Jon

I never posted comments here before, and that's the first and last one: It's one drop too far... first there was that summary/full article change, then now choice is gone and the name change, as well as the domains. I'm just removing the old wtf bookmark from my bar, no promise, no menace, just dropping.

I did enjoy Paula, and the others articles, but not enough to bother with a changing spirit.

Do not bother to address me with a reply, i'm just gone. Bye.

  • Why the failure is the name compulsory? (unregistered)

    See above for the comment.

  • Anonymous (unregistered) in reply to Why the failure is the name compulsory?

So.. let me get this straight. You changed the name of the site to no longer include the word "Fuck", just to avoid an awkward situation where you have to explain what 'WTF' stands for?

If that isn't the reason, well I'm sorry but that's what I and many people gather from this post, which is just sad. I always find it quite funny when people try to coddle and protect their grandparents and elderly people because they think "ZOMG, SWEAR WORDS, OH NOOOES!", and it turns out that the old person in question doesn't really give two shits.

Come on, dude... changing the name just so you don't have to say "The 'F'? It uh.. stands for.. uh...". Now THAT is a WTF in itself.

  • ChrisF (unregistered)

.renameTo won't work here, because it's not a name, but a brand, and I agree with those who say that you are wilfully destroying your own brand. What about a Schroedinger's cat solution? It's still TheDailyWTF, but nobody is told what WTF stands for unless they ask you, and depending on your mood, you can answer What The Fuck or Worse Than Failure? Or even better, you leave it to the reader to decide whether they prefer to think of WTF as What the Fuck, Worse Than Failure or the new weird thing on technorati?

    I like considerate people:
I think you should study the word censoring. Censoring is when someone removes certain speech deemed inappropriate by some certain ideology. No one is censoring him, nor pressuring him to censor himself. He's making changes for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons is consideration of others, an idea that is miles away from censorship.

You and all the smart persons saying "that's no censorship", have you ever heard the word "Self-censorship"?

Correcting one's own speech for being more political correct is just a form of (Self-)censorship. Being political correct is nice and sometimes just necessary, but being PC just for being PC is siiiillllly!

So yes, I'm another 'new name sucks' whiner, but at least I'm free and mature enough to use swear words when necessary.

Strange: the country that invented the idea of 'free speech' and strangely still stands for liberty in some parts of the world (mostly in your own land I suppose) - but it's inhabitans doesn't even realize that they conduct self-censorship on a broad, daily basis.

    Too sad...

The site's written in .NET (check the URL extension - .aspx), which has a convention of naming methods with an initial capital letter. I think it's to piss off Java programmers that decide to learn C#...

The new name is a crude reinterpretation of the WTF acronym. It may be politically correct but it reflects just a fraction of the site's content. The name change seems like a frantic move. You cannot except anyone who isn't accustomed to what WTF implies to read or understand a single article and there is no meaning to have a name liked by people who will never read a single article. WTF is an intuitive exclamation, worse than failure simply make no sense. Bring thedailyWTF back!
The Real WTF is that if he'd changed the name to "The Daily WOE" (that's for "What On Earth") then he'd have kept the original sense of the WTF part of the name and had a site name acceptable to prudes. He'd have even been able to avoid having to explain it to lay-people.

Now, if only we could guess the real identity of the prude Alex's worried about. Given his propensity for changing the names involved, I'd guess it must not be a grandmother. Maybe a potential future employer instead?

Captcha: WTF (means What The Fuck, and don't you forget it buddy!)

Just tell your grandmother that WTF stands for Worse Than Failure and change the name back. If she or anyone in your family ever calls you out on it then you know they know and they'll understand why you told them the little white lie.

  • Devildog (unregistered)

Well, I'd like to second the opinion that the name change is a big mistake, also I think the gradual changes like long-ass texts are an unfortunate waste of readers' time.

After at least 265 comments, for whoever might be counting, here's yet another gratuitous occurence of each of the words, with my compliments:

No, I understand perfectly well that you have to get rid of the fuck to stay in business. After all, we saw what happened to fuckedcompany.com. Wait... it'd didn't happen. They're still going strong, even with fuck right there in the URL. I wouldn't care if you explained WTF differently to your grandma, but with the new name, I won't be thinking of this site every time I run across a WTF in my code. You're missing you audience with this change, but then the quality of the WTF's has been dropping over the half-year I've been following it. I hope somebody picks up the dailywtf.com domain name and remakes the code-oriented site that used to be.

    -Lars

  • Henrik (unregistered) in reply to Lars Clausen

The new name doesn't fit, the old one was SO much better. And it's fairly lame to hide behind excuses like "the site isn't all that daily anymore" instead of the real reason.

Oh well. The content is still great, though, keep it up!

I don't care if you want to change the name. Some people will find the old one offensive and if that bothers you, fine. However, makeing up other words for WTF just seems like a cop-out to me. Rename the site entirely and just drop WTF in any form

haha lots of wtf's in that sentance.

  • (cs) in reply to Anonymous

Suggestion: Modify the server to process both the new and old domains. Replace the header image with the proper banner for the domain visited, share all the rest of the content.

Promote worsethanfailure.com, but leave the old name for all those who can't stand change. I don't think the name change is good or bad, but it's a good thing if it makes Alex happy with his work...

Add me to the list of people very disappointed with the name change and petitioning a return to the old name. While "Worse than Failure" does have an element of cleverness to it, it utterly fails to hit its target market. When I see some fucked up code, I don't think "wow, that's really worse than failure, I should submit it to the site."

Though I expect our pleas are falling on deaf ears, please change it back.

Consider who your audience is. You are catering to a very specific group of people who actually know what WTF stands for without having to ask. Why alter the site to conform to a completely different group who only have a vague understanding of what the site is about?

Please reconsider. This just doesn't feel right.

  • Ahnfelt (unregistered) in reply to Troy Mclure

Try reading the five pages of posts. Hell, just half a page. Most of the active readers, those who care to post, obviously care.

In any case, I don't care much about the name itself, although I liked the old one better. I do care about the political correctnes reason, but sure, it's Alex' decision.

Recruiting new readers will be hard because the new name is a turn-off, except maybe for some percentage of the US population who cannot approve of internet slang.

In any case, consider being a bit more mature the next time you feel the need to disagree. Name calling is pretty weak.

  • petey (unregistered)

I liked the old name better!! WTF is "Worse Than Failure"???

The new brand is weak. Please change it back!
